THE HAWKE'S BAY.-ICE AND ROUGH WEATHER

The Tyser Company's steamer Hawke's Bay, which anchored off Raogitoto reef on j Wednesday night, came up harbour at day- ' light yesterday morning, . and berthed at the Queen-street wharf. Captain J. (J. Felgate • is still in command, and Mr. Dobbie is in charge of the engine department, with Mr. < R. M uir as chief refrigerating engineer. The ; steamer left London on January 12th, and for about a week following her departure heavy gales were encountered, which greatly retarded her progress; in fact, until Las Falmas was passed, un average speed of only : about 7-.\ knots was attained, owing to these • unfavourable conditions. As the steamer \ proceeded south the weather moderated, trouble of another description in the shape : of a flotilla of icebergs awaited her, and as j for some time she was fairly surrounded by ! the icebergs, Captain Felgate found it ad- , visable to slow down considerably, in order I to ensure safe navigation. The first sight of j Ice was got on the 11th February, when two bergs, estimated to be each about 400 feet in height, were passed in lat. 45Jdeg. south, and on the 16th of that month those on board' counted around them 18 icebergs, ranging from 200 feet to 500 feet in height. Thick weather added to the unpleasant nature of the situation. At length the Hawke'a Bay got quite clear of trie obstructions, ana although sne again met with several bergs on the 25th February, in lat. 47deg. south and long. 107deg. east, a generally fane passage was thereafter experienced to Melbourne, which was reached on the 11th inst. After landing her consignments at that port the steamer proceeded on to Sydney,, and left that port for Auckland on Friday evening last, and met with fine weather on the ran across. The Hawke's Bay has about 800 tons of general merchandise for this port, and is expected to leave for Gisborne and Southern forts to-morrow morning.
