A SERIOUS CHARGE.
[BT TKLKaBAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION, Christohorch, Monday. At the Lyttelton Magistrate's Courb to-day William Henry Pollard was committed for trial on a charge of attempting to stab Isaac Simpson on board the steamer Mamari. Both are seamen of the Mamari. The evidence for the prosecution showed that at half-past eleven p.m. on Saturday the accused came on board the worse for liquor and wanted to fight. Simpson struck accused, who ran to his bunk and got a sheath knife. He made an attempt to cut Simpson's throat. Later on accused made an attempt to stab Simpson in the back, but was prevented by the night watchman of the steamer. The accused, in his defence, said he knew nothing of the charge against him.
