SPORTING.

ONSLOW TROTTING- CLUB'S SUMMER MEETING. The Summer Meeting of the Onslow Trotting Club took place on Saturday afternoon at Potter's Paddock. ' The weather was beautifully fine, and there was a large attendance of nearly 2000 people. The grandstands and paddock were crowded during the afternoon. Messrs. L. Adams and Andrews worked the totalisators satisfactorily, and in 10s tickets a total of £1430 was put through the machines. The officers of the club worked hard to make the meeting |a success, and although there were some minor details which a greater amount of practice would have improved, the greatest and most serious defect was the utter want of punctuality, which prevailed to such an extent that the starting of the third race was nearly an hour behind time. Mr. M. Foley, the starter, could not be considered a success with the flag, especially in the sprint Cony races, the time wasted in two of these eing trying to the patience of the spectators and irritating to the ponies and jockeys, although the latter were greatly to blame for their want of attention to orders. Mr. J. Hayr., sen , officiated as judge; Mr. G. Robinson, as clerk of the scales; Mr. T. Brown, clerk of the course; Mr. VV. Knight, handicapper; and Mr. James E. Cooke, secretary. The racing was interesting generally, the pony flat and hurdle races being remarkably close contests, and the groat form exhibited by the mare Yum Yum in the Electric Trot Handicap was of itself a compensation for lateness of the hour at which it was run and her finish in that race was one of the features of the meeting. The following are the results of the races : — Maiden Trot Handicap of 80sovs; second horse to receive sso#s from the stake, 'or alt horses that have never won ail advertised trotting race exceeding 26sovs in value at time of entry. One mile and a-half. 50—Mr. D. Harford's b g Disappointment, aged, 10s. CD. Harford) 1 35—Mr. F. Wilson's br h Diwcombobulator, aged, ss. (Sandall) 2 31—Mr. Archibald's ch g Rockett 11., aged, 3a. At the back of the course Disappointment rook the lead, and was '20 lengths in front of Discombobulator when passing the stand the first time, with Jlazelwood third, out Disappointment keeping steadily on won comfortably by 15 or 20 lengths from Mr. Wilson's horse. Rocket 11. a fair third, and the ot hers scattered. Time, 4m. 395. Dividend, £t 14s.

Maiden Pony Handicap of 20sovs ; second pony to receive Ssovs from the stake. For ponirs 14 hands 2 inches and under, that have never won an advertised race exceeding losovs in value, at time of entry. Six furlongs. 209—Mr. R. A very great delay took place at the post, but at length Mr. Foley lowered the flag to a moderate start. Kit led the field to the back of the course, where Chance It took command, and Barbary ran into second place. Kit being a good third to the straight, where she put in a strong claim, and answering with great ganien.-ss to the vigorous calls of Cook, almost caught sinton on the post, the latter having to ride for all he was worth to win by a bare half length, Barbary two lengths away third, and the others tailing out behind. Time, lm. 255. Dividend, £1 4s. A protest on the ground of crossing was dismissed. Onslow Trot Cup Handicap of 50sovs; second liov.se to receive 6sovs from the stake. Two miles. 179—Mr. G. Mcßride's b g Duke C., 3yrs, 445. (Charteris) 1 86—Mr. M. T. uleeson's br m Katie M., 4yrs, scratch (Gleeson) 2 40— W. J. Greenwood's b m Nellie 11., aged, 425. (T. Greenwood) 3 101, Schoolgirl, 10s. ; 10, Ida, 225.; 11, Ingar, 545.; also ran.

In the first turn past the post there was little alteration in the relative positions of the homes, except , that Katie M, a stranger, starting on scratch, had greatly improved her" position by closing in on the rear guard. Schoolgirl and Ida broke badly turning out, of the straight. Duke C, making the best use of his long start, had a lead of 20 to 30 yards when passing the stand the second time, Nellie 11. then being his closest attendant, and the limit horse, limar, third, Katie M. being fourth and rapidly closing the gap which separated her from the others. In the turn out of the straight she passed all the others but Duk" C, and although she broke badly at the back of the course she maintained second place being unable to reach Duke C, who won comfortably by 12 or 15 yards from Katie M, Nellie II a fair third. Time, Sin. 50|s. Dividend £1 Is.

Flying Stakes Handicap of 25«>vs; second pony tc receive ssovs from the stake, for ponies 11 hands 2 inches and under. Six furlongs. 86—Mr. K. K. There was, again a most irritating delay at the starting post, but at length the field was sent away in fair order, a great race up the .straight resulted in a iuo»t exciting finish, Queen Quail, who came with a rush, catching the leadeis 111 the la.it few strides, and secured a victory by a length. Chance It anil Direct being almost ties for places. Time, lm. 21s. Dividend, £4 2s. Harness Trot Handicap of 35sovs; second horse to receive ssovs from the stake. Two miles. 83 -Mr. Q. Mcßride's br g Sparrowhawk, aged, 455. (Charteris) . .1 101—Mr. .J. Martin's ch li Charlie, aged, 15s. (owner) 2 12—Mr. K. G. Sandall's b m Schoolgirl, aged, 15s. (owner) .. .. 3 26, Three Cheers, scratch ; 2, Ida, 255. also ran. Charlie passed Ida and Schoolgirl at the entrance to the straight, and Three Cheers although last was going well but broke in tho turn out of the straight. Sparrowhavk had a commanding lead of about half the length of the course when passing the stand, and Charlie was .second, leading School girl by about 20 lengths and Three Cheers was then in third place, Ida being last. Sparrowhawk striding along steadily lett the issue in doubt, none of the other competitors ever getting near enough to press the little gelding, and he won by 50 yards, 30 yards separating Charlie from School Girl, the latter heading Three Cheers by about 10 yards. Time, 6m. 4s. Dividend, £1 4s. Handicap llurdi.es of 25sovs; second pony to receive ssovs from the stake. For ponies 14 hands 2 inches and under. Over six flights of hurdles. Williams' b h Fauntleroy, 6yis, list (Kowden) 3 30, Eftie, list, also rail. This was a most interesting race lCffie led at the back of the course, but Kauntleroy and Little Raven going to the front raced together round the top and home turns to the straight, which was entered by Kauntleroy, Little Raven, and Butterfly almost abreast. A great run home left the issue in doubt, tor it almost s-emed a dead heat hetwoen the three, but the judge separated Tittle Raven from tins others, giving him first place by a. nose, Butterfly gaining second honours, and fc'auntleroy third. Time, 3m. 48. Dividend, £1 ss. Ei.kctric Trot Handicap of iiSsovsj; second horse to receive ssovs from the stake. One mile.

In I,he top turn she passed all the others except Gay Belle, hut the latter had such along lead that it seemed almost hopeless to continue the pursuit, but Edwards persevered with such effect at, amidst great excitement, Mr. Abbotts mare passed Uay Belle a few lengthy from toe winning post, and won in splendid style by a length. Dividend, £1 ' J,..-
