The Northern Company's steamer Wellington arrived from Whangarei last night with passengers and general cargo. She leaves for the same place again to-night at 10.30 o'clock. Yesterday morning the Northern Company's steamer Chelmsford arrived from vVhakatane and Tauranga with a cargo of maize, etc. The steamer was detained at Whakatane for several days, owing to the bar not being passable. She leaves for Tauranga, Whangamata, and Whakatane, at 5 p.m. to-day. The Union Company's steamer Ovalau left last evening for Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, and Sydney with a larse miscellaneous cargo. Last evening the Northern Company's steamer Argyle lei t for Kuaotunu, Mercury Bay, and Tairua. She returns to-morrow evening. Yesterday the Northern Company's steamer Douglas left for Whangarei. The Dutch barque Amsterdam hauled out into the stream yesterday, and sails for London to-day. The brigantine Lady Mabel is loaded with timber at Hokianga for Sydney, and will sail the first favourable change. The Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's iteamer Mamari will leave tor Napier today. A barque, bound South, passed Russell on Wednesday evening. This will probably be the Devonport from Newcastle to this port. The Northern Company's steamer Clansman arrives from the North early this morning. Yesterday the Union Company's steamer Wakatipu arrived at Wellington from Sydney, which port she left at 2.30 p.m. on Saturday last. The barque Centurion, under charter to the New Zealand Shipping Company, has been ordered on to Wellington from Otago Heads to load for London. The schooner Aotea sailed for the East Coast and Gisborne, last night, with a full general cargo. Yesterday, the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamers Rimutaka left PortChalmers for Wellington. She leaves the I ; . latter port for London on Thursday next. - THE WAITEMATA. Yesterday afternoon the barquentine Wai- / temata arrived from Newcastle with a cargo of coal for Mr. J. J.Craig. Of the passage across, which has been a somewhat lengthy one of 17 days, Captain A. Campbell reports :—Sailed from Newcastle on December 30 with a light southerly wind, which hauled round to the eastward and continued to vary between south-east and north-east until the 9th inst., when we had two days' fair run with the wind from south to south-west. The wind then hauled round to the eastward again and continued for four days, thence to arrival light variable winds prevailed, with two days' fog and calm between f \ the Three Kings and North Cape. TiritirJ light was sighted at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, and the tugboat Eagle took us in tow at 4 '■ p.m. yesterday, and the vessel was berthed «-• at the -street Jetty at 5 m. As soon as the Waitemata was berthed the work of - discharging was proceeded with and continued throughout the night, and it is ?■ expected that she will be discharged to-day and sail to-morrow for the Kaipara to load timber for Sydney.. ' raining a slip from the Chief Weather Bureau, Brisbane, on which was the following message—" Thrown overboard, ship Valparaiso, Sept. 12, "94, lat. 3311, long. 166-4015 east. All well. Wind S.W.— Menhoz, Master." Mr. Jennings has forwarded the original of the message to Mr. C. L. Wragge, the chief of the Queensland Weather Bureau.
