M. ZOLA AND LOURDES.

TO THE EDITOR, Sir,ln your Saturday's article on M. Zola and the Pope a tone of reverent agnosticism might well become you in speaking of the miracles at Lourdes. So many complicated ailments, altogether outside nervous diseases, have been authenticated as to leave little doubt of supernatural interposition. As I understand a medical gentleman intends to refer to special cases I will refrain here, but I do think it would be more becoming and modest for one to say, "It may be so although I cannot believe it," than to sneer at those who believe. You say Bernadette fancied she saw an apparition of the Blessed Yirgin. How do you know she did not see such apparition Presumption of credulity in others has often no other basis than the utter scepticism of the writer. am, etc., . . ■ E.F.G.
