ATHLETICS.

CRICKET.

THE cricket matches in connection with the Auckland Cricket Association were con-, tinued on Saturday in the presence of a considerable number of inberested spectators. The chief interest naturally centred around the Gordon v. Auckland, and Parnell v. United matches. The former ended in a win for Gordon by five wickets, and the latter in a win for United by 24 runs. GORDON V, AUCKLAND. With two wickets down for 36, and thus 30 runs to the bad, Auckland resumed their second innings with Arneil and Wynyard, Hatton, the not-out man, being away in Wellington. Wynyard's stay at the wickets was of short duration, as Gould disposed of him at the cost of a single, and then dismissed Wilson for one less, the latter's endeavour to lose the ball from within his crease being fully up to expectations—of the onlookers. On T. Neill joining his captain a different complexion was put on the game, both scoring freely and confidently, till Kelly upset Neill's wicket when the latter player s score stood at 19. The Rev. Richards next appeared, and the run-getting progressed merrily, notwithstanding a change in the bowling, Mr. Richards in particular appearing to play the slows with unusual confidence. Williams relieved Kelly, and after beating Arneil with three successive balls finally levelled his leg stump. Arneil's contribution of 31 was the result of good cricket, and, being obtained when badly needed, was of great service to his side. Stone succeeded him, and with a forward cut of his first ball scored a brace, but the next delivery caused a collapse among his stumps, the ball coming low and very fast from the pitch. Jacobs filled the vacancy, but after breaking the dreaded "duck, gave Ansenne a catch at point off Gould, who had replaced Kenderdine. Queniery was not even so lucky as his predecessor, being caught at slip by Williams off Gould without scoring, and the innings closed at 113, Mr. Richards being not out with 19 to his credit, obtained in excellent style. It is peculiar to note that the three double-figure scorers have had little or no practice at all this season, whilst all the others are assiduous in their attendance at the nets. Gould with 6 for 55, and Williams with 2 for 6, bowled well. Kelly's wicket cost him 40 runs, and Kenderdine had 8 runs scored off him without obtaining a wicket With 48 to get to win on an easy wicket, Williams and Williamson opened Gordon's second innings to Jacobs and Stone. Neither caused much trouble,,, Williams being caught by Clayton, after a previous let off by the same fieldsman off Jacobs, for 3, and Williamson being bowled by the same trundler.for 4. Gould shaped very badly to Stone, who, after beating him several times, bowled him for a single. A tew minutes later Jacobs sent down a beauty to Ball, which just lifted the bails, the batsman not having scored. With 4 down for 10 runs the game became decidedly interesting, but Pabst and Gilfillan put on 15 before the latter was well taken by Clayton off Jacobs for 8. Ansenne then became associated with Pabst, and by careful play, and despite every effort of their opponents, the score mounted steadily to 40 without further disaster. At .that total Arneil relieved Stone, but the change did not come off though. With the total at 46 Ansenne was missed at the wickets off Arneil, and in the next over a 3 off Jacobs finished the game, Gordon winning by 5 wickets. Both the not out men played correctly. Ansenne at times hitting out boldly. To Pabst, however, the greater praise is due, as had he not stopped the rot Auckland would probably have pulled the match out of the fire. Jacobs, though, had hard luck in not bowling him before he had scored, the ball, after beating the bat, just skimming the off bail. Both Jacobs and Stone bowled excellently throughout, the former securing 4 for 37, and the latter 1 for 7 off 60 balls. Though two chances were missed, the fielding was on the whole good. Appended are the scores :—

AUCKLAND UNITED V. PARNKIX. This match proved a hard-fought contest, resulting in a win for United by 24 runs on the first innings. On the previous Saturday United had scored, while Parnell had one wicket (Wright) down for 47. Mills and I Ohlson, the not outs, resumed for Parnell, j and carried the score to 75 before Mills was ! bowled ; having added Bto his previous ! total. Ohlson and Holle increased the total | to 99, when the former was dismissed for a capital innings of 34. Holle was out at 109 for a useful 17. Things now looked very bright for Parnell, but the steady bowling of R. McPherson and Stemson proved too much for the later Parnell wickets, and after the retirement of Edmonds, who batted very steadily for 16, the others were speedily dismissed ; the innings closing for 136. The last four wickets all fell with the total unaltered. United batting one short, were all dismissed in their second innings for 58 ; S. McPherson (17) being top scorer. Edmonds captured six wickets for 35, and Lawson two for 13. Parnell went in for their second innings having about 25 minutes to play, and scored 22 for the loss of three wickets when time was called.
