THE NEW SYRIAC CODEX OF THE GOSPELS.

Mas. Lewis is just bringing out; & translation of the Syriac Codex of the Gospels found by her at the Convent of St. Catherine at Sinai, which will be published by Messrs. Macmillan and Bowes, simultaneously with the publication of the original texto by the Cambridge University Press. Some of the divergencies from the received text exhibited by the MS. are interesting, and are set forth by Mrs. Lewis in her translation. She has taken the Authorised Version throughout as the basis of her version, so that English readers can detect at once any verbal alteration in the manuscript. Wo have been permitted to quote some of these, which will servo as a sample of what awaits the purchaser of Mrs. Lewis' translation.

In Matthew xviii. 20, the promise there expressed is put in the more emphatic form, "There are not two or three gathered together in My name and I nob in the midst of them." Matthew xix. 29, "Everyone that hath forsaken houses, ... or father or mother or wife or children . . . the words father and wife are omitted. Matthew xx. 12, " The burden and heat of the day" is rendered in the more intelligible form, "The burden of the day in the heat." Mark x. 59, Bartimaeus (who is called Timseus) puts on, nob casts away, his gar-' ments. - , s Mark xvi. 9-20, which is omitted in many of the oldest manuscripts, is also omitted in this. Luke i. 63 64. The words "and they marvelled all" are placed in the more natural position after verse 64pointing to the loosing of Zacharias' tongue, and not to the naming of the child "John," as the object of marvel. Luke x. 41, "Thou arb careful and troubled about many things " is omitted. John viii. 57 reads, "Thou art nob yet fifty years old, and has Abraham seeu Thee?'—which follows more naturally after " Your father Abraham rejoiced, etc.," than does fche received text. John xi. 39. Here ft question of Martha's is inserted, " Lord, why are they rolling away the stone ?" * John xx. 16. Here there is a remarkable interpolation. " She saifch . . . Rabboni . . . and ran towards Him with the intention of touching Him." In conclusion, we may notice fche interpolation in Luke xxiii. 48, which this MS. has in common with Codex Bezae at Cambridge: ,he verse ends, "Woe to us thab these things now are ! woo to us for our sins."— British Weekly.
