THE BISHOP OF WAIAPU.

On September 25 the Synod of the Diocese of Waiapu nominated the Venerable William Leonard Williams, Archdeacon of Gisborne, to the see of Waiapu, rendered vacant in January last by the .ssignation of the Right Reverend Dr. Stuart. The Bishop elect is the elder son of the first Bishop of Waiapu, who died in 1877. Archdeacon Williams graduated at Oxford in 1852, and since 1853 has worked among tha Maoris in connection with the Church Missionary Society. He is one of our best Maori scholars, and has published a dictionary of the native language. He is held in much esteem wherever he is known as a man of learning, of sound judgment, and of high Christian character. The nomination has to be confirmed by the Standing Committees of the six dioceses of the ecclesiastical province before the Primate can make arrangements for the consecration of the new Bishop.
