THE "CITIZEN READER."
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, —I notice with pleasure in to-day's Jerald that " Civic Instruction" is likely to be introduced into our public schools through the adoption of Cassell s " Citizen Reader" as a text-book, on the warm recommendation of our new chief inspector. However excellent this splendid little volume undoubtedly is, I venture, from a careful perusal, to suggest that in my humble opinion its usefulness might be much enhanced, if this exclusively English book were somewhat improved and enlarged by the addition of a supplement, dealing with our own colonial circumstances, and, if possible, also with the outlines of the different forms of government obtaining in the principal countries outside the realrn of the British Empire. A reading book of this kind, placed into the hands of the rising generation, and explained by enthusiastic teacners, could not fail to benefit its readers, by arousing their interest in public affairs, and by creating in them a feeling of genuine patriotism. Hearing that the Hon. the Minister of Education was contemplating the compilation of a fresh uniform text-book for the whole colony, I took the liberty to bring my views on " Civic Instruction," as advocated before the Athenaeum Literary Society (and favourably commended in your leader of July 30 last) to Mr. Reeves's knowledge, expressing the hope that he may .see his way to include this most useful item in the future general reading book. Gladly welcoming this proposed innovation in the true interest of our progressive colony.—l am, etc., E. Eugster. Auckland, September 26, 1594.
