THE TONGAN LIBEL CASE.
A trial of some public interest took place ab Tonga, commencing on the 20th ultimo. The charge was one of criminal libel, pre ferred by Mr. A. M. Campbell, late Chief Postmaster and Collector of Customs, againsb " Mr. ■■ C. 1).". Whitcombe, Foreign Secretary to the Tongnti Government. The alleged libel was contained in a report of an audit of the Post Office accounts. The case was heard _ before the Hon. Henry Berkeley, Chief Judicial Commissioner for the Western Pacific, and two assessors. Mr. Thomas Cotter, solicitor, of Auckland, who had been specially retained by the Tongan Government, appeored for t?je defence, while the plaintiff (Mr., Campbell) conducted his own case. The trial lasted three days. At the commencement of the proceedings on th«» third day the plaintiff said that he did not Wish to proceed. with the- prosecution. • Mr. Cotter asked the Court to enter up a verdict for the defendant, which was done, with costs £59 9s lOd. *v( , < J .
