THE GOLDFIELDS.

WAIHI MONTHLY RETURN. During the four weeks ending July 28th, 2107 tons of ore were crushed and treated for a return of bullion valued at £6498. This is the largest return the Waihi Company has yet obtained during any previous four weeks.

: WOODSTOCK UNITED G.M. CO, An agreement has been made by the directors of the above company with Mr. McConnell (representing the New Zealand Crown Mines Company) for the use of the McArthur - Forrest cyanide : process, the rights of which are the exclusive property of the shareholders of the Crown Company within a radius of three miles of their mine, a concession granted to them by the Cassel Company some years since. Arrangements have also been made with Mr. H. Adams for the erection of a 10-stamp mill and a complete cyanide plant, on a suitable site on the Woodstock property, at Karangahake, which are to be completed in four months. It is satisfactory know that active ' steps are now being taken to develope this valuable mine. The directors yesterday made a call of 3d per share, payable on the 22nd instant.

MINE MANAGERS' REPORTS. Victoria (July 31).—After meeting with the junction of the big reef and the one we were driving on, and finding ;no improvement, I have turned to drive along the course of the hangingwall of the big reef towards the Waiotahi boundary. A distance of some 60 feet on the course of the reef will reach this point. . The hangingwall portion seems to be the most promising part of the reef, containing more, mineral and a better chance of meeting witn small veins in the hangingwall striking into it. I had a trial crushing of three loads from the junction of the two reefs, but it was not payable —only yielding about 3dwt to the load.

" ; v The fortnightly "meeting of the Woodeide Mutual Improvement Association was held on the evening of Thursday, the 26th July. Mr. Benge in the chair. The business was a debate on "Is Civilisation preferable to Un-civilisation?" Mr. H. Rollett took the affirmative, and Mr. A. Steele the negative. These gentlemen were supported lay their respective sides; and, after an animated discussion, a vote of the members was taken, and resulted in a tie. Two new members were elected, and the business of next meeting was then announced' to be "Papers." . "The Condition of the > Insane Historically Considered," is the subject of Mr. Ewington's popular lecture before the Auckland Institute next Monday evening. Mr. Ewington's practical knowledge of the working of the Asylum at Avondale for many years should enable him to invest his subject with local interest. We understand he intends exhibiting limelight illustrations of methods of mechanical restraints of: lunatics on the Continent of Europe., Only a few years ago the insane were treated more like j: wild animals than human 1 beings.
