THE GOLDFIELDS.

The return from the Cassel Gold Extracting Company's tailings plant at Waihi, for four weeks ending June 28 was 12930z, value £1673, from 1470 tons tailings. ' - CROWN MINES CO. The manager of the above company (Mr. 3. McConnell) forwarded us the following telegram from Karangahake yesterday :— " The assay value of bullion recovered from 432 tons of ore crushed and treated by the Mew Zealand Crown Mines Company, Limited, during last month, is £1326 sterling." - _• MINE MANAGERS' REPORTS.

Norfolk (July 7).—The winze under the Missouri level has been sunk a further depth of 10 feet, making the total depth of the winze 28 feet. The reef at the bottom is four feet in thickness, and is carrying excellent mineral for gold. Colours are freely seen in each breaking down. There are now broken out about 30 tons ready for treatment The drive from the crosscut is now extended 52 feet, six feet having been driven for the past week. The two reefs are now almost together in the face, and the dirt coming from them has greatly improved for the last few feet, and 1 am very hopeful of soon having good news to report from this end of the mine. • r, :•. New Moanataiari (July 9).—Although there, have only been about lolbs of picked stone got from the : Golden Age footwall scopes during the past week, the yield from the general quartz has shown nut a very slight falling off at the battery. Jones's lead, on the 100-foot level, continues to show good strong dabs of gold, and has a very promising appearance in the drive, which is still being driven eastward on its course., The stopes, however, have not been looking quite so well, the lead being small, and producing but little picked stoue. The new south-east crosscut on the 150-foot level has now been extended 120 feet from the chamber, or within about 40 feet of the old workings on No. 9 reef. There are two small promising-looking ribs of quartz which have been passed through, and which I intend to prospect as soon as circumstances will allow. The surface workings are being continued as usual, and are supplying a fair amount of profitable mineral.

Hazelbank (July Stoping on the cross reef litis been continued as usual during the week. The front stope is being extended towards Turtle's workings, as there is every likelihood of meeting with a better quality of crushing dirt in this direction, as in driving the level above some nice gold was obtained about 15 feet east of the present face. The lead is now more defined, but the quartz has not contained much mineral, and therefore shaped rather poor at the battery ; however, an improvement may be expected when the distance above mentioned is reached. There is also a block of ground on this reef between No. 1 intermediate and No. 1 level which is well worthy of a trial. It is situated on the end of Turtle's old workings, and is about 100 feet in length by 40 feet ill height; some good crushing dirt was taken out close up to this ground, and there is in my opinion a fair prospect of payable ore being met with here. It is mv intention to commence on this at once. There is little change to report from the stopes on Darby's; the load still carries splendid mineral, amongst which a little gold has been seen, but nothing to select as picked stone. The drive near the break at No. 1 level is still being extended, but no more quartz has been met with ; the drive is passing through a good channel of country. 1 am sorry to say the crushing just completed turned out very poorly; 56 loads of quartz from the different parts of the mine, and rive loads from the tip were put through for 330z 9dwt of gold. The stuff from the tip gave a return of 3dwt to the load. I trust the next crushing will give a better result.
