DEATH OF MAJOR STONEY.

Another old settler has gone to his rest. Major Henry Butler Stoney, who for many years has occupied honourable positions in tho Auckland province, died at Kawakawa on July 5, at the age of 78. Hi 3 son, Mr. J. B. Stoney, Clerk of the Magistrate's Court in Auckland, received information on Thursday morning, about ten o'clock, that his father was no more. Major Stoney entered the army as an ensign in the 19th Regiment, in 1837. and served in various capacities for fifteen years. In 1840 he accompanied his regiment to Malta, and for some time acted as Resident for the Island of Cirago, a position which was honourably filled. Five years later he went with his regiment to the West Indies, where Major Stoney was appointed PortAdjutant and Superintendent of Roads for the Island of Tobago. While stationed there, Major Stoney was thanked in general orders for his exertions in saving life and property in the fearful hurricane of 1847. A year later the regiment went to Canada, and the deceased was again thanked in general orders for holding an outpost against superior numbers during the rebellion of that year. Subsequently Major Stoney was sent home and recommended for staff em ployment and three years later he became paymaster of the 99th Regiment. Major Stoney was with tho 40th when stationed in Victoria, and was present at the Ballarat riots. Ho came over to Now Zealand with tho regiment, and again saw active service during the Taranaki war, and also in the Waikato later on. When the regiment was orderad home at the close of the war Major Stoney decided to stay in the colony, and accordingly settled on a farm at the YVade. He took an active part in politics, and a few years ago he went to Kawakawa, and was inspector of roads under the Government. He was of a literary turn of mind, and for many years has been a contributor to the Auckland Weekly News. He was also the author of several books; " Victoria During the Ballarat Riots in 1854," " A Residence in Tasmania," etc. He leaves a widow and two sons, both grown up.
