The latter boat was taken on to the patent slip yesterday morning, to undergo an overhaul prior to taking up her running. THE P. AND 0. LINERS. " It does not pay," remarked the chairman of the P. and 0. Company, at a recent meeting in London, " to run steamers of the Australia and Himalaya type." The initial outlay is very great, and although the earnings are large, the expenses are exceedingly heavy. Still, it these steamers were always as extensively patronised as the Australia is on the present voyage (says an Adelaide exchange), the company would have very little reason to complain ef their investment being uiiremunerative. The travelling public have shown their appreciation of the new expresses), as shown by the fact that when the Australia arrived at the Semaphore on Sunday night she had on board over 200 saloon passengers, 225 of whom were booked through to India and Europe. The ship's purser expects 60 more to join the steamer at Adelaide. The passage-money earned on this voyage will probably amount to not much less than £15,000, while the freight will bring in several thousand poundr more. On the outward run the Australia took away 314 saloon passengers from London and Brindisi, while others were taken in at intermediate ports, so that the steamer's earnings could not have been much less than the figures quoted above on the outward run also.
