A case containing some peculiar features was heard in the District Court, Melbourne, on April 3. Four years ago an arrest was made on the Moonee valley course of a clerk who had embezzled nigh on £2000. Just previously he had token a cash wager of £40 to £10 about Twilight's chance for the Portsea Handicap. Mabel won, but a month afterwards was disqualified and the race given to Twilight, In the meantime the clerk had been tried, convicted, and sentenced _to five years' imprisonment. Further, a civil action was brought against him, a verdict obtained, and his effects sold. _ Among these latter was a card case containing the ticket for the £50. During the clerk's imprisonment a friend of his waited on the layer and requested payment. The latter, however, declined to pay anyone but the clerk himself, more especially as no ticket was forthcoming. This, he pointed out, might again be produced, and he made to pay it. The clerk had been released, but is unable to trace the ticket, and the fielder refuses to pay till it is produoed. . The olerk is now suing for the £10 cash he lodged when he took the wager. Lebel, by Nordenfeldt— who is now located at Hawera, the other morning, while being exercised, broke one of his rider's stirrup irons, and threw the lad who was riding htm. He dashed through a fence of three barb wires and one plain wire, and, strange fcs say, escaped with only a few scratches. " 'j > s'-n--'.*-
