The largest berg was about two miles long and 500 feet high, with deep bay in one side. It appeared to be as solid as when it left the Antartic regions. After darkness set in the vessel grazed along a piece which was floating low in the water. Fortunately the sea was smooth, or it would have done damage to her side. THE TONGARIRO. Shortly after seven o'clock yesterday morning the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Tongariro, Captain F. Mayors, R.N.R., arrived in harbour from London, anchoring at the Powder Ground, and berthing at the Queen-street Wharf during the forenoon. This fine steamer on this occasion only brings a couple of passengers, having been converted into a cargo steamer for the time being. The voyage, which has occupied 52 days one and a-half hours, has been an uneventful one, ahd all onboard are reported " all well." The following is a report of the voyage:—Left London February 28th at 6.17 a.m. Down channel a strong S.W. gale was experienced. After clearing the Channel experienced fine moderate weather till within two days of Teneriffe, when heavy south to south-easterly weather and sea were encountered, which lasted till after leaving Teneriffe, which, having coaled, we did at 9 p.m. of Wednesday, March 7, after a stay there of 11 hours 24 minutes, After a generally fine passage, passing Cape Verde at 4.55 a.m. on the 12th, crossing the equator in 9" W. Long, on the morning of the sfch, and having experienced moderate S.E. tiades we signalled off Cape Town at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 26, and rounded the Cape of Good Hope the same evening. The easting was disposed of in 50' and 51" S. lat., the weather during the whole time being generally moderate, with the wind from all points and much dull weather, Ice was fallen in with between the parallels of 47' and 50" S. lat., and the 48" and 61' meridians of E. long , in the shape of a few isolated bergs, at considerable intervals. Dense fog was encountered in the southern part of the Tasman Sea. The Tongariro arrived at this port at 7.20 a.m. yesterday after a passage from London of 52 days 1£ hours. All well. The following is a list of the officers :—Commander, F. Mayoss, R.N.R.; chief officer, Mr. Croucher; second, Mr. Giles; third, Mr. Fisk; fourth, Mr. Wortley; chief engineer, Mr. Relf; steward in charge, Mr. R. G. Black well. The steamer will commence discharging cargo this morning, and on completion proceeds to the Southern ports. TERRIBLE VOYAGE OF A NEWCASTLE STEAMER.

The ABpatria, belonging to Messrs. Runciman, of Newcastle, has just had a terrible experience in crossing the Atlantic. The Aspatria is a fine steamer of 4100 tons deadweight (says this Westminster Gazette), and took on board a cargo of grain at Newport News, bound for Hamburg, leaving the former port on January 30. Immediately on getting to se* she experienced heavy weather, and on the 31st shipped several tremendous seas, which carried away her steering chains, and washed the tarpaulin from the hatches. Sails were utilised to cover the hatches, and answered for a time. Nos. 2 and 4 hatches burst open, and all hands had to be called on deck to secure them. During this operation William Carney, a fisherman, of South Shields, was washed overboard and drowned, and three other men were also washed into the sea, but by an occurrence not unknown at sea were swept back again and saved. Heavy seas now broke continually over the vessel, and the decks were completely swept fore and aft. She lost three boats, her main funnel was damaged, the upper bridge swept away, the chartroom was gutted out, and the navigation instruments were washed overboard. The hatches again burst open, the cabin skylight was stove in, the companion carried away, and the cabin flooded. The funnel had to be stayed, and the only way to steer the vessel was by manoeuvring the engines. The captain decided to steer for Halifax, about 300 miles distant, and in order to make the vessel in some degree manageablefor she was then going round in circles —he got a drag made with some spars and the maintrysa.il and mainstaysafl, and then, with this and the aid of a large boom ho managed to get the vessel under command. But even this expedient was not to be depended on, for on one occasion the vessel got her head too far to the S.W., and in trying to box her off with the head sails she got stern way, and the drag v/aa coining into the quarter, and had to be cut away to prevent it fouling the propeller. After tedious manoeuvring with the engines and steering by the drag, the captain managed to bring the vessel within six miles of Halifax en February 3. She was duly brought iuto port, and is now repairing. This achievement saved the vessel and cargo, and must rank as a feat of seamanship which reflects the greatest credit on the skill and determination of the captain and chief

officer, the more so as the former worked with two ribs broken, and the latter with his head cut open. Both are Shields men, the captain being Mr. C. C. Bruhn, of South Shields, and the chief mate Mr, George Dunn, of North Shields. ■ . PORT OF ONEHUNGA, ARRIVALSGalrloch, s.s., McArthur, from New Plymouth.
