SLA VERY IN CHINA.
That slavery in its worsb form exists even in Chinese cities that have long since come within the sphere of influence excited by the Western nations is instanced in a case that occurred on the 3rd ultimo ab Foochow. A woman sold her only daughter, a girl of 13 years of age, as a slave to a Fooohoiv man for 100 dollars, bub the girl ran away and returned to her mother. The mother sold her then bo another man for 60 dollars, and the child was taken away. The first purchaser finding his property in the hands of the second demanded to have the girl given up to him, but the possessor declined to part with the girl on the ground that he had paid a proper price to the mother for her. The Arab purchaser forthwith laid his case before the magistrate, and police were sent bo arrest the mother, but they were too late. The woman, hearing that the cese was before the authorities, hanged herself. The case was decided in the iollowing manner —If the second purchaser desired to keep the girl he was to pay 20 dollars for the funeral expenses of the deceased woman, and 40 dollars to the first purchaser. And this monstrous transaction occurred in Foochow only on the 3rd of last month, __________
