WELLINGTON NEWS NOTES.
[by TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] Wellington, Thursday. THE OTTAWA CONFERENCE. Mr. Lee Smith received his final instructions from the Postmaster-General, to-day in respect of the claims of this colony to participate in the benefits of all commercial advantages to bo derived from the contemplated extension of the mail and electric cable services. The Hon. Mr. Ward, in his statements at the recent Postal Conference, indicated what these were so far as these two great projects are concerned. As Commissioner of Trade and Commerce, he has drawn up instructions for the guidance of the New Zealand representative at the Conference so far as relates to actual trade relations, and the mutual obligations thab might be encouraged through a reciprocal tariff in respect of the products of each country. THE NEW APPOINTMENTS. The appointments mado yesterday by the Cabinet were unexpected, bub have not occasioned any greab measure of surprise. The medical ones are purely cases of professional standing. Dr. Henry, who held them, is bub a few days deceased, and for that reason they come upon the public with something of the suddenness of a surprise. The same with regard to the appointment of the Sergeant-at-Arms. This also follows closely upon the decease of the late holder of the office. The local evening journals approve of the medical appointments, bub they condemn the appointment of Colonel Fraser in very strong language. The Post declares the appointmenb to be " scandalous," and "against all propriety." The Press refers to i£ contemptuously as purely political— reward of political compliance. The appointment of Mr. Thomas Bracken to the position of Parliamentary reader is popular. thk dairy INDUSTRY. It is stated that the lands in the neighbourhood of Bunnybhorpe, which two years years ago could be had for £10 or £12 an acre, cannob now be bought under £16 an acre. The increase of value is attributed to the rise and success of the dairy industry in the district.
