THE DIRECT VETO.
TO THE EDITOR. .. Sib,—Sir Robert Stout only wants tlu» direct veto—that is, that a bare majority of voters shall be able to prevent half'the population from getting a glassof beer or wine if they require one. - I have lived for years amongst people whose conscientious scruples prevent them from eating meat, and who regard anyone who kills a cow as impious. Would Sir Robert Stout agree, if he lived in a district where the "majority were Hindoos, to allow them to prevent all the Europeans and: Mabommedau inhabitants from having a slice of meat? And if not, why not?—l am, etc., R. H. Bakewell.
