INTERPROVINCIAL CRICKET.

WELLINGTON V. HAWKE'S BAY. [BY TELEGRAPH.— ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Thursday. The interprovincial cricket match between Hawke's Bay and Wellington began in the Basin Reserve this morning. The visitors had been strengthened by the inclusion of Beale, a fast bowler, who arrived from Napier last night, and proved a valuable acquisition to his side. Wellington had a fairly strong team in the field, but the bowling department was weak. The weather overhead was fine, with a gentle breeze ; but the wicket was alow* although it improved somewhat as the day advanced, and the ground was dead. The attendance of the public was small, about 400 people being present during the afternoon. The home team batted . first, and compiled 132 runs after an even innings. At the luncheon adjournment, with 7 wickets down for 80, the prospects of the Wellington men were not over bright, but on resuming Ashbolt and A. Blacklock made i much needed stand, and knocked up 49 before the partner* ship was dissolved. Beale trundled very steadily, keeping a good length, and the same may be said of Gore. The visitors fielded remarkably wellin fact, their display in this department of the game was equal to anything seen on the Wellington ground this season. The work of Martin, Williams, and Tairoa in this respect calls for special mention, and Canning, behind the wickets, was safe and sure. A notable feature of the visitors' first innings was the fine display of Williams, who knocked up 36 in a very short time, his score including live boundary hits. Martin and A Deane appeared to be well set, when the latter had the misfortune to be dismissed just on the call of time. The local men fielded very well. The Wellington first iunings closed for 132. Young Ash bolt, who had played sound cricket, showing excellent defence, carried out his bat for 30. Wellington took the field at twenty minutes to tour, Gossage and Hill being the first of the visitors at the wickets, Upham and Ashbolt bowling. Martin, with the score at 74, joined A. Deane, and runs came steadily, and despite frequent changes in the bowling. A dissolution was only effected on the last ball of the last over of the day, when A. Deane was caught at the wicket, by Niven off Holdship. 96—7 —17. The partnership had produced 33 runs. A. Deane contributed his quota in faultless manner, and the same may be said of Martin. The match will be resumed at halfpast ten to-morrow morning. The following are the scores : — Wellington.— Innings. C. Cross, c Gore b Beale 1 R. Blacklock, c Canning b Beale ... ... 4 A. R.
