COMMERCIAL.

New Zealand Herald Office, lliursday evening. During the past week, business on the Stock Exchange has been very stagnant. Bank of Now Zealand remain at low values; old issue shares are offering at 68s 6d, and new at 935. Sales have been reported of old issue at 68s 6d. Colonials have been sold at 31s 9d, with sellers at 32s 6d. New Zealand Insurauce are of lower value. Sales have been effected at 595. South British are wanted at 34s 9d. Auckland Gas have changed hands at £10 12s 6d ; small parcels could still be placed at £10 lOs ; buyers are offering £5 os for new issue. Union Steam are enquired for at £7 7s 6d, and Northern Steam at 3s 9d. Taupiri Coal are wanted at 14s; sellers require 15s. In mining, Alburnias are a shade easier; shares are wanted at 2s 6d, holders are asking 2s 9d. Hazelbanks are of lower value, and may be obtained at Is lOd. May Queens are also easier. Waihis have been in demand, and numerous transactions have been reported up to 26s 6d ; shares are still wanted at 25s 6d. There is little doing in other mining stocks. The ruling of the Supreme Court in banco on Wednesday, in the case of Reed v. MaCorquodale, m the matter of transfer of shares in the Loan and Mercantile Company, has been a revelation of the law that comes at this particular juncture as of an important character. The interests involved in the decision are so considerable that we can scarcely doubt further litigation, perhaps not in this particular case, but in others where the transactions have been on all fours. There is more or less an unsatisfactory tone pervading commercial circles, ana although there is considerable travelling, and a large weekly distribution of wage money, the low prices for a variety of our provincial products is curtailing expenditure, and there is no trade exempt from the influence of " tightness." The import market is so dull that we should not be justified in elevating small transactions into items for report. We learn that a large purchase has been made in the stock of a wholesale firm giving up the fancy trade. The local price of low-price candles has been advanced |d. The Indian tea market is closed with the exchange question in a very unsettled state. The production of silver in various parts of the world controls the value, and no Secretary of State for India can arbitrarily fix the rupee value at a price that buyers of rupee paper will not give if the State fixes the limit above the relative price of bar silver in the open market. In a struggle between autocratic and natural laws, no one can question the greater strength of the latter. Those interested in the development of the meat trade are wondering at the complacency of the New Zealand Government at the efforts of Mr. Reid. the .Victorian representative, bent oil the development of the Australian meat trade. If it is good euough for Victorian politicians to interview naval and military authorities about, say, a freezing depot at Malta or one at Bombay, surely it is good enough for the New Zealand Government to be equally alive in looking after the possibilities of trade expansion, with a very much superior chance of securing it. But we have a large lot of misdirected energy, which is more of a destructive than a constructive kind. In our Summary columns we have reviewed the month's trade. There is little doing in produce. Maize is worth 2s Gd off wharf in large, and 2s 7d in small, lots. Oats are without quotable change, but the market is a point weaker. Potatoes are in full supply, and are nominally quotable at from £2 10s to £3 per ton, but there is much discrimination of quality, with the market in a bad way for sellers. _ The inquiry for grass seed has been considerable, and several good lines placed. We report Cocksfoot: Southern buyers are operating freely at New Plymouth, where all seeds are firmly held, and there is a good deal of speculation. We hear that most of the Akaroa seed is badly weathered, and the yield will be light. We quote, on spot, from 4d to 4£d for bright, well-saved samples, with a corresponding reduction according to inferiority. Rye grass is firmly held in Canterbury. We quote here machine dressed 48 6d to 5s for heavy samples, and Poverty i Bay seed at 6s to 6s 6*l. j Milling wheat: The English, Continental, I American, and Australasian _ markets are again weaker. Bad weather in the South Island is retarding their harvest, and causing several holders of prime old wheat to stop selling, as they fully expect, should the rain continue, that theirs will soon be wanted to mix with this season's wheat. We are leased that nearly all grown in this neighbourhood is now safely secured and stacked, but a gentleman just arrived from the South I informs us that while inspecting theOaniaru, Timaru, and other Southern wheat-raising districts, he noticed that a large quantity was very badly sprouted. Fowl wheat : There is not much selling as this market is expected to be overstocked shortly with damaged new Southern. Bran: Heavy arrivals of old Southern have meantime glutted the Auckland market, and the prico has dropped another 5s per ton. Sharps: There is fair inquiry at last week's price. Flour is dull of sale.

In the local produce market the price of butter has advanced. At present the prices are :—Best dairy fresh butter is 8(1, second class 6d, and third-class 5d per lb wholesale. Eggs remain at lOd per dozen wholesale and Is per dozen retail.

KAURI GUMJMARKET. ! The following is the report of the gum ! market and ruling quotations, as furnished j to us by the committee of gum merchants :— Poor ordinary £24 to £25 I Ordinary ... £28 Good ordinary £32 East Coast ... £54 Parcels of superior ordinary command higher prices according to quality and degree of cleaning. Supplies from Ist February to date, 468 tons. The market continues very depressed, and few sales are reported, and prices are nominal. BY TELEGRAPH. DUNEDIN WOOL SALES. Dunbdin, February 22.— The fourth wool sale of the season was held to-day. Buyers were scarcely so numeraus as at previous sales. For all nicely grown half and crossbred there was a good demand and fair competition up to market values. The demand >r merinos was not active, and the price suffered to the extent of |d to £d per lb, the result of a considerable quantity being faulty in character owing to the wet season and the lateness of the shearing. With that exception, the prices may be quoted as on a par with the last sales. LONDON. Press Association.—iClectnc Telegraph. -Copyright. London, February 21. The total quantity of wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom is 2,836,000 quarters, and for the Continent 872,000 quarters. Wheat shows a decline of 6d per quarter. This week 6000 quarters Australian wheat for prompt delivery, and 7000 quarters to arrive in February and March, nave been sold at 25s 6d. New Zealand Trust and Loan 5 per cent, debentures are quoted at 23. AUCKLAND MARKETS. [Corrected to noon of Thursday.] FARM AN J) DAIRY PRO K. WIIOLKHAI.K. IIKTAIL. 8. d. 3. d. *. <1.
