AUCKLAND TYPOGRAPHICAL ASSOCIATION.

The half-yearly meeting of the above Association was held on Saturday evening in the lodge-room of the Foresters' Hail, Karangahape Road. There was a large attendance of the trade present, Mr. J. Regan" presiding. The report and balance-sheet were read and adopted. The following is the report:— The Board of Management, in bringing before you its report for the past half-year, has great pleasure in recording a continuance of trade prosperity, which, - no doubt, is partly owing to the increase in the number of orders retained in our city, which were previously executed elsewhere. Your Board feels assured that a still further' Impetus will result from the revision of the tariff promised by the Minister of Labour ; which we hope will be at an early date, for we have to recollect that there are still r many unemployed in our city, and apprentices are fast completing their terms. It will be in the memory of members that the Hon. Mr. Cadman promised' that as ( many as possible of the unemployed compositors in each city should be given employment in Wellington during the session of Parliament. We are pleased to report that so far as Auckland is concerned, this promise has been fulfilled. As Will be seen by the balance-sheet, the receipts from all sources amount to £135, and the expenditure to £21 7s 6d, leaving a credit balance in your favour of the respectable sura of , £117 12s 6d. It is with very great pleasure we have to again record the good feeling and harmony existing between the employers and your association, and express the hope that it may long continue* without interruption. We would specially impress upon every member who is connected with any of the various bodies in our midst the importance of using his utmost influence to see that the printing for such is executed at the offices which are working under the Association rules, as this mutual help must be apparent to all. We are glad to report that, with a few exceptions, members are fully paid tip. The few exceptions should recollect that it is most dishonourable to receive the benefits conferred upon all employees by the existence, of an organisation like the Auckland Typographical Association, and leave their felloW-oraftsmen to maintain the Society. This also applies to a few who have dropped out altogether. The Chairman, in proposing the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, during the course of a lengthy address, referred to" many matters of interest to the trade", arid stated that although it was a matter for congratulation that they had every reason to believe a great decrease had taken place in the importation of printing from various parts of the world, which could be done equally as Well, as expeditiously, arid at a very small increase in cost here, still there was room for effort, no less a sum than £24,465 having been expended in printing : work outside the colony during the past year, and though a promise had been given by the Government that recognition would be taken of suggestions from the Associ- ; ation in the tariff of next session,' he j hoped ' the patriotism- of the merchants 1 and citizens generally of Auckland, would support the endeavours of the Society by , having their orders executed by Auckland I printing firms, thereby giving employment I to oar local workmen and apprentices i finishing their terms. He congratulated the • Society on their increasing numbers', there > being at present Upwards df 100 members. He suggested that a mortality fund be i established in connection with the Society, ' and this would be considered by the incoming Board of Management. ' - i The following officers were appointed :— = Presidertb, Mr. Jas. Regan (re-elected) vice-president, Mr. Joseph Graham ; secre- ' tary, Mr: F. C. Cleveland." ■■ .■ . 1 A vote of thanks to the chairman term!-
