Coltar, chief officer, reports that the steamer left London on November '24, and called in at Gravesend to take in powder and dynamite, leaving the next day. High northerly winds and seas prevailed until reaching Teneriffe, on December 1. Here the coal bunkers were replenished, and the voyage resumed the same afternoon. The south-east trades were picked up in 5' N., and proved unusually strong. All the way from the Cape of Good Hope to Tasmania there was an entire absence of bad weather, both the barometer and thermometer being remarkably steady. From Tasmania until making the New Zealand coast strong easterly winds were experienced. On Monday night the steamer anchored off Tiritiri. and yesterday morniug was brought into harbour by Pilot Sainty, and anchored at the Powder Ground. Since the last time the Duke visited our port she has undergone a complete alteration in the engine department, at the expenditure of a good many thousands of pounds The old compound engines have been removed and triple expansion engines of the latest pattern fitted in their place, at the works of Messra Denny Brothers, Dumbarton. A SYDNEY VESSEL IN TROUBLE.. In the Admiralty Division of the High Court at Liverpool the Sydney barque Altcar, in command of Captain Magrath, who for many years has traded out to Sydney port, was proceeded against. The plaintiffs, Messrs. Thomas Royden and Co., are shipwrights carrying on business in Liverpool. In August, September, and October last the barque Altcar was lying at Liverpool in need of supplies and repairs, which were necessary for her. By an order of the master, the plaintiffs supplied the necessaries and effected certain necessary repairs to the Altcar, and there was now due to them in respect of those supplies and repairs the sum of £1134 6s id. which had not been paid. Mr. Bateson, for plaintiffs, said this was an action by default. He had the affidavit of Mr. Royden in support of the claim. The papers had been filed, and he asked for judgment against the ship. One matter he ought to mention was that the master had intervened, claiming for wanes and disbursement. He took oat a summons on 10th November for sb order for leave to answer and defend. He then put in a defence alleging his own claim, and also alleging that a mortgagee had a claim, and traversing the plaintiffs' statement of claim.. The plaintiffs then took oat a summons to strike out the defence so far as the mortgagee and his traverses were concerned, leaving the, defence to stand as the master's claim tor wages and disbursements. He asked for the costs of that order. Mr. Nelson, for the captain, said he could not object to his friend's claim, but, inasmuch as the master had a very large claim, he had to ask that all the claims should be referred to the registrar. With regard to the question of the costs of the intervener, he thought they would be costs in the cause, as he was entitled to appear. Mr. Bateson said he asked for judgment with costs condemning the ship, with an order for the sale appraisement of the ship. His Lordship granted this application, and ordered the proceeds of the sale to be paid into Court.
