ANGLICAN CONFERENCE AT HOBART.
During the earlier part of lasb year Dr. Montgomery, the. Bishop' of Tasmania, issued invitations bo the bishops and to representative clergymen and laymen of the various Australasian Anglican dioceses to attend a. conference to be held at Hobart during the presenb month. At that time Bishop Cowie considered that he would be able bo attend, bub .circumstances have since arisen which have made ib undesirable for him to be away from Nuw Zealand at the present juncture.' His position as Primate is in any case a most responsible one, but his duties aro much heavier : at the present time, when two dioceses,' 1 namely, Wellington , and Waiapu, are vacant. Besides, this, the Bishop feels thab he ought to be present ab the annual conference of • the local Board of the Church ; Missionary Society aboub to be held in Auckland. However, though the Primate will, remain.in New Zealand, the Diocese of Auckland will not be without representatives I ab Conference, for the Kev. George Mao Murray, of St. Mary's, is already on his way to Tasmania, and Archdeacon Dudley and Mr. J. W. Tibbs (of the Grammar School) will leave at the ' end of the present week. The Rev. W. Bentty, the warden of St. John's College, who; was r also ; at; one time spoken of as likely to go, will not, it is feared, be able to get away. -The Conference will specially consider the present position of the Diocese of Melanesia, of whion the Bishop of Tasmania recently made an episcopal visitation, and furnished a most complete and valuable report.' Ib is ; understood that Dr. Montgomery will place t important * suggestions on this subject before the Conference. theirs matters connected with : the welfare of the Australasian Anglican dioceses will also come up for discussion. The presence of the representatives of the Anglican Churches of the other colonies, all of whom have been invited; to be present at the .opening' ceremony in s connection with the new cathedral At Hobarb, will make; that ceremony more. interesting and t imposing, and that is one of the reasons .why this .Church' authorities of Tasmania have made the dates of Conference and the opening of- the cathedral coincide. The recommendations of the -Conference: will be looked forward; to with considerable «Y interest) throughout Australasia.
