AUCKLAND CRICKETERS IN THE SOUTH.

MATCH AGAINST CANTERBURY.

CRUSHING DEFEAT ¥OR AUCKLAND. [BY TELEGRAPH.— CORRESPONDENT. ; * 'iGHRKTOHORCH; Saturday. A rime summer morning saw the play in the Auckland-Chriatchureb match .resumed on the second day. Harman filling the place of Cuff, and Neil! bowling against the wind, with Lawson at the pavilion end. Both bowlers were on the spot, and . runs came slowly, the players being cautious. After Harman had made 7, Lawson got him lbw, 330 being on the telegraph board. Labatt came in next, and after three balls Lawson clean bowled him. Seven runs had been scored when Lawrence returned one hard to Lawson, but the bowler declined it. Demaus, who had taken Labatt's place at the wickets, gave two uppish strokes to leg, but no fielder was there, and ; a well ■ earned hit to the boundary saw 340 go up. Stemson released Neill, and a maiden resulted. Demaus and Lawrence who were scoring freely soon had 370 on the board ; two fours, and some singles brought 380 up. Then Lawrence gave a difficult chance to King, off Neill, who had replaced Lawson. With the score at 396 Stemaon at last suc- ' ceeded in bowliag Lawrence, who had played a magnificent innings. The only chances he had .riven being very difficult ones. Lawrence thus made 167 or 10 short of Cuff. With the score at 399 King removed Palmer's bails. ' Wilding followed, and made a single, thus bringing the score up to 400 for five wickets. At this stage Canterbury declared their inning's closed. It was generally wished that Lawrence would have the honour of topping Cuffs 176, as he had throughout his innings played sterling cricket. Demaus was not out with 38, this total being got, with the exception of his first few strokes, by sound cricket. Stemson bowled really well, but without luck, and Lawson was straight and hard to play. The fielding too was good. At half-past twelve p.m. Mills and Moresby faced the bowling of Robertson and Labatt, but Moresby played loosely, and was soon caught off Labatt. Holle came in next, but could only raise the score to 15 when he left, caught at point off Robertson. Jacobs, of whom great things were expected, only got 4 when he tamely returned one to the bowler Labatt. 20—3—4. The players then adjourned for lunch. After lunch Weill relaced Jacobs, and without further score Mills was caught at the wickets by Collins off Robertson. 21—4—12. Seven runs were added and then King was cleaned bowled by Labatt. Lawson signalised his advent by a fine cut for 4, but after scoring a 3 and five I singles he was bowled by Robertson. Kallender was the next to come in, bnt only to see Neill for the third time bowled off his pads. Stemson left immediately afterwards, and McCormick came in to help Kallender with the runs. Some fine hits were made by Kallender, who had his day out, hitting freely and cleanly. No less than six fours appeared in his score of 33. Robertson bowled him, and with 9 wickets down, Fowke being unable to bat owing to his bad finger, Auckland succumbed bo Canterbury by an innings and 156 runs. Our boys seemed to have the heart knocked out of them by the previous day's E lay and with the exception of Kallender the atting was not up to second eleven form. Towards the finish the wickets crumbled a bit, which perhaps helped Robertson, who had bowled throughout with fine effect. Thus finished the most severe defeat Aucklanders have ever had, and one which we shall long remember. The following are the scores :— Auckland, first innings 157 Canterbury.—First innings. The cricket matches under the auspices of the Auckland Cricket Association were resumed on Saturday afternoon.
