A CHILD BURNED TO DEATH.

Clark accidentally got its clothes ignited, and was burned to death. WELLINGTON NEWS NOTES. ,i< ♦ ■ [»T TELEGRAM.— CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Saturday. THE PETITION AGAINST SIR R. STOUT. The Dunedin correspondent of the Post telegraphs under this day's date that a legal opinion had been given in that City to the effect that the petition against Sir Robert Stoat's return for Wellington was Dot properly " lodged or served. If this statement is well founded what is to be said of its being lodged by Mr. W. B. Edwards, and the security found after some delay. It is stated that the Returning Officer is in Pelorua Sound on » "fishing excursion," that he was heard of from Cable Bay last night, and that be may return to Wellington by the o.s. Rotorua tomorrow. LANDS DEPARTMENT. Sometime since Mr. J. G. Wilson, M.H.R. for Otaki, requested the Minister of Lands that the Horowhenua Block should not be appropriated for State purposes, as many desirable settlers were anxious to purchase portions of it. It is now stated by the department that the intention of the Minister is to, appropriate eight hundred acres for a State farm, and to cat the remainder up into small sections for settlement. ;i '",,,/'.
