The Nautical Association of Hamburg had a meeting on October 23 to discuss the subject of the British Board of Trade's regulation respecting the fixing of ships' side-lights in such a manner that the red light should be visible 4 degrees to starboard and the green light 4 degrees to port, thus crossing each other a certain distance a-head of the vessel. The question before the meeting was, " Is the angle of 4 degrees too much or too little?" Thn conclusion come to was that 2 degrees would be better than 4 degrees. ' Recently, in the presence of a large and Influential gathering, the new Messageries Maritimes steamer Ernest Simons was launched at the Ciotat by the president of the Administrative Council, Monsieur Girette. This vessel is named after the founder of the Messageries Maritimes Company. The following are her dimensions Tonnage, 6956 tons; length overall, 466 feet; and breadth, 47 feet. The speed attained at the trial trip was 18 knots. She Is intended at present for the Atlantic trade. t Messrs. Palmer and Co., Jarrow, have just received an order from the British Admiralty for the entire* construction of the hulls and machinery of three fast seagoing torpedo boat destroyers, which are to have a high rate of speed. They are to be about 200 feet in length, and similar to those recently placed by the Admiralty with Messrs. Thornycroft and Messrs. Yarrow. This is quite a new class of work for the district.

The fight for supremacy between Southampton and Liverpool in the Atlantic trade is being keenly maintained. With the .Lucama the Cunard Company have undoubtedly secured th-a fastest vessel that ever crossed the ocean, but the great advantages of the Southampton route are probably illustrated by the last trips of the Lucania and the American liuer Paris. The latter vessel left Southampton at 1.20 p.m. on Saturday, October 28, and arrived at New York at 6 p.m. on Friday, November 3, ahead of the Lucania, notwithstanding that the passage of the latter vessel had beaten the record. It is very naturally claimed that nothing can better emphasise the advantages of the Southampton route over that by Liverpool and Queenstown than the fact that the American liner Paris, taking passengers from Loudon at exactly the same time as the Lucania, arrived out and landed her passengers more than an hour in advance of the Cunard "record breaker."

TELEGRAPHIC COMMUNICATION WITH LIGHTHOUSES. j Telegraphic communication between HpH ships ana the shore, and between,^'jL n * t . houses, seems to be feasible, *nd^ v j tnout very great expense. - It is Eepoj* ed that the Lighthouse Board has been/ snccessu l in establishing elecSric^ ommunicatioa with lightships by »ttaoi !lin the core of the cable to the anchor aud making a conductor ?h i £2f«# -it has been demonstrated that L.fA2s«6 oi electricity produced by the be reduced to a minimum. It is *»S» reported that communication by telephones has been made with persons on board a lightship anchored over a mile from shore, with the anchor chain used to complete the circuit. The experiments made in England have also been in a measure successful, so that there seems no reason why lighthouses, lightships, and life-saving stations should not be put in telegraphic communication with each other. Why this should be done is so manifest as hardly to need stating. The establishment of a lighthouse service furnishes the best argument. And, as the efforts to Improve and extend that service are constant and always heartily supported, the connecting of lightships and lighthouses by telegraph, with reporting stations, naturally forms part of the work of improvement.
