AN INTERESTING DISCOVERY.
The excavations which are now being made at Delphi by the French Archaeological School have loci to an important " find." A marble slab has been unearthed containing a hymn to Apollo. The hymn is accompanied with musical characters, the appropriate note being placed over such syllable. This discovery is, from an archaeological point of view, of the greatest into* rest, as ib sheds . the /only light we have yet had upon /the music of ancient Greece. As ancient art, manufactures, and civilisation have been brought to light through excavation, our boasted modernism, has . been spoiled of one imagined triumph after another, and we have had to remember the , words, "Is there anything J whereof ib may be said, ' See, this is new.' i It hath been already of old , time, which . was before us?" Ib will be a new surprise if it is discovered that our music also has to yield its pretensions, and that some of our finest melodies have come down, to us from a forgotten past.
