[BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Dunedip,, Friday. In the Chess Congress, Barnes has now played the whole of his games, his score being 7 wins and 3 losses. With' One game each to play the scores of the others are Edwards, 6£ wins and 2J losses ; Cleland and Brown, 6 wins and 3 losses; Lelievre, 4§ wins and 4$ losses ; Burton, 4 wins and 5 losses; Pleasants, 2£ wins and 6J losses; Mouatt, 8 wins and 7 losses ; Smith, 1 win and 8 losses. Hookbara and Mellor have not concluded their game. With two to finish their scores are ; Hookham, 5J wins and 2i losses; Mellor, 4 wins and 4 losses. ; ,:ri • <.- Later. ■■ Edwards had 1 the move against• Bortin, 1 and played the Zukertorb opening. The game was very even up bo "the 13th move, when , Edwards advanced' tho King's pawn, and won the exchange on; the ,24th move. Borton played a splendid defensive game, but through an oversight in the 27th move he resigned .. shortly afterwards. .• Barnes adopted the Pebroff defence against Smith, who converted i it into the Fottr Knights game! Up to the 151 th move the game was even, when Smith " allowed his opponent to win a pawn with a strong,' attack. He • lost by an exohange, • 'and. ' making a . slip at the 14th move, resigned. Mouatb opened with the Scotch", Gambit against Pleasants, who resigned on the 32nd move. Lelievre opened with! the Guiooo Piano against Cleland» and t. after an even and creditable game, Cleland won. , The game between Hookham and Melior lasted nearly eight ; hours. \ V Hookham played the Ruy Lopez.7 'iMellor made a splendid defence. At length Hookham, who had overlooked a chance of taking hi^.oppopent queen, secured. an advantage which caused Mellor to resign. . Hqokhum says was one of the hardest games he has ever contested.
