THE PETITION AGAINST SIR R. STOUT.
_ * [by telegraph.—nwsr correspondent.] Wellington, Thursday. This business is still surrounded with mystery bo such an extent that the idea of "hoax" clings to it persistently. This evening it is stated that the £200 deposit as security for costs " has been found." The manner in which the deposit was made is nob the least mysterious part of the business. It is stated that a "registered letter" addressed to the Returning Officer (Mr. James, Clerk of the Wellington Resident Magistrate's Court) was received this morning, and that this letter is supposed to contain the £'200 deposit. Mr. James is expected to return from his holiday to-night. Then again, it is said thab one of the Judges has declared thab the £200 security for costs is nob sufficient for this particular case. It is now stated that the so-called wager of Captain Barry had nothing to do with the election, but was a test to verify one of the old gentleman's " yarns." The registered latter mentioned bears yesterday's post-mark. It is said that when the Returning Officer comes to town the whole thing will be made public
