On December 6 the brigantine Eliza Firth was sold by auction, by Messrs. S. Cochrane and Son, Mr. Dawson being the purchaser, at £425.

At half-past eight p.m. on Dec. 2 Messrs. Huddart, Parker, and Co.'s fine steamer Tasmania, Captain Thomas McGee, berthed at the Queen-street Wharf from Sydney.

The Union S.S. Company's steamer Upolu, Captain George Crawsnaw, arrived on Dec. 13, from Samoa, Tonga, and Fiji, with a cargo of augar, fruit, etc. At seven o'clock on Tuesday, Bee. 19, the Tyser Company's steamer Maori King, Captain T. Priske, arrived from London, via Melbourne and Sydney, with about 900 tons of general cargo. On Monday, Dec. 11, the Shaw Sa,v,ill and Albion Company's ship Margaret Galbraith, Captain John Collingwood, arrived from Glasgow after a passage of 130 days. At six a.m. on Saturday, December 9, the Union S.S. Company's steamer Monowai, Captain M. Carey, arrived from San Francisco, Honolulu, and Apia. She resumed her voyage for Sydney at 6 p.m. the same day.

The New Zealand Shipping Company's ship Waitangi, Captajn Forsdick, arrived in Harbour on Tuesday, Dec. 19, and anchored at the powder ground. The ship is 109 days from London, and brings a cargo of general merchandise. The American barquentine Nora Wiggins from Mew York via Wellington, arrived on Friday, December 8, off the North Head. The vessel left Mew York on July 17, and arrived at Wellington after a passage of 110 days. After discharging cargo she took on board 448 bales of flax, and sailed on November 30 witli a strong southerly gale. ' The Union S.S. Company's steamer Maori, Captain Richardson, arrived in harbour at two a.m. on Sunday, December 17, from Calcutta, Singapore, and Townsville, bringing a cargo of bonedust, bones, and general Eastern produce for this port and the South. The steamer has acquitted herself very creditably on both the outward and homeward voyages, and Captain Richardson, his officers, and engineers are to be congratulated upon the performance of the steamer. The new steam launch which has been built by Mr. C. Bailey, frr Waiwera, has been out for a trial spin, which proved very satisfactory. Her engines, which are on the

compound principle, have been supplied by Messrs. G. Fraser and Sons. The launch is very strongly constructed of kauri, is diagonal built, and of the following dimensions : —Length, 45 feet; beam, 9 feet; depth, 4 leet 6 inches. She will prove a very serserviceable little vessel for the trade in which she is to be employed. The Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's ship Forfarshire, Captain T. Perry, arrived in harbour on Tuesday, Dec. 19, from Sautos, via Otago Heads. It will be remembered that the ship loaded with wool, etc., for London at this port last year, and on discharge went out to the Brazilian port. She sailed from Santos on October loth, and experienced favourable weather until making Otago Heads on the 12th inst., where Captain Perry received instructions to come on to this port to load with general cargo for London. Cu Sunday, Dec. 17, the cargo steamer Carradale, which has been expected at this port for some time past, put in an appearance, being brought in by Pilot Sainty, and anchoring in the stream, and after having been visited by the authorities, berthed at the Queen-street wharf. Company"t; steamer Maori arrived from Fiji with sugar, etc., ana is now undergoing a thorough overhaul at Wellington, the Southern Cross having iu the meantime taken up her trade between Suva and the various islands of the Fiji group. On the same day the Nova Seotian barquentine Nora Wiggins arrived from New York, via Wellington, with a part cargo of American merchandise, under charter to Messrs. Arnold, Cheney and Co. She has since loaded with kauri gum and flax for New York, and is expected to sail to-morrow. On the 9th the mail steamer Mouowai arrived from San Francisco, Honolulu, and Apia, with the English and American mails. Company's steamer Taviuni arrived from Suva and Levuka with sugar, fruit, etc. She is loading grain, etc., in the South for this port, and leaves for Fiji again on January 4. Ou the 19th the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's steamer Mamari arrived from Loudon with a large cargo of general merchandise. She loads frozen meat, etc., at this port for London, and proceeds South tomorrow to complete. The same day the Tyser Company's steamer Maori King arrived from London, via Melbourne and Sydney, with general cargo,and is now at Wellington loading tor London. The same day the New Zealand Shipping Company's ship Waittuigi arrived from London, after a passage of 110 days. She is now discharging, and on completion proceeds to Lyttelton to load for London. The Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's ship Forfarshire arrived the same day in ballast from Santos, and loads here for Londen shortly. On the 22nd the steamer Richmond arrived from Tahiti and Rarotonga, with copra, pearlshell, etc. She is now undergoing overhaul, and is to leave for the same ports again about January 24. On the 23rd the barque Wenonaarrived|frotnKembla, N.S-W., with coal for the Colonial Sugar Refining Company, and is now discharging. On the same day the American barque Obed Baxter arrived from Now York via Port Chalmers and Lyttelton, under charter to Messrs. Arnold, and Co., with part cargo of American merchandise, and on discharge loads with kauri gum and flax for New York. On the 26th the barquentine Ysabel arrived from the Friendly Islands and Niue, and loads up for the same places again shortly. The barquentine Cuthona arrived the same day after a lengthy cruise amongst the Hervey Group and other islands with a cargo of copra, cotton, pearlshell, etc. The barquentine Silver Cloud arrived from Newcastle with coal on the 27th. On the 4th the

barque Freetrader sailed for the Thames to load white pine timber for Melbourne, and lias since sailed for her destination. On the 6th the Union S.S. Company's steamer Poherua left for Kembla, N.S.W., to load coal for Fiji, and returns to this port with a cargo of raw sugar. The same day the ship Turakina sailed for Lyttelton with part cargo from Liverpool. On the 9th the barque Killarney sailed for Maugonui to load timber for Sydney. On the 10th the barque Kathleen Hilda sailed for the Thames to load kauri and white pine timber for Melbourne, and sailed thence on the '26th. On the 17th the barque Lake Erie sailed for Lyttelton with part cargo of salt from Sharpness, and loads there for London. On the 20th the American barque Alice sailed for Sydney to load wool for Antwerp. The four-masted barque Moryen is steadily loading with wool, kauri gam, etc., for London, and will be followed on the berth by the Forfarshire. On the 21st the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Aorangi left Wellington for Rio de Janeiro and London with the largest consignment of butter and cheese which has ever left the colony in one ship. On the 22nd the barque Columbus, from Rio de Janeiro, called off Otago Heads, and was ordered on to Gisborne, where she loads for London. On the 24th, the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's steamer Rangatira sailed from Port Chalmers for London. The Rimutaka, from London, arrived at Hobart on the 23rd, and left again the next morning for Wellington. The schooner Clansman is daily expected at this port from Surprise Island, with a cargo of guano.

MOVEMENTS OF MEN-OF-WAR IN THE PACIFIC. After undergoing a thorough overhaul in the Calliope Dock, H. M.S. Curagoa left for Akaroa, and has since arrived at Lyttelton, where she will remain until after the holidays, and then she returns to Auckland. The Lizard has left Lyttelton for the Chatham Islands. The Orlando, Katoomba, and Ringarooma were at Sydney at latest advices. The Rapid, which has been stationed at Samoa for sometime called at Suva early in the month, and then proceeded to the Ellice and Gilbert Groups, reaching Sydney last week. The Ringdove was at Hobart recently, and is to proceed to Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney, being due at the latter port about February 20. Her present crew will be paid off on February 26. The Goldfinch is in the Solomon Group engaged in patrol duty, and returns to Sydney shortly. The Dart is engaged in an important survey work in the

New Hebrides, and the Paluma is similarly employed in the Solomon's. The German warship Bussard is at present at Auckland, and is to undergo a thorough overhaul in Calliope Dock. The flagship of the French Pacific Squadron, the Duguay-Trouin, has arrived at Lyttelton from Hobarr, and after a short stay there proceeds to Wellington, and then comes on to this port. She is bound home by way of South America. H.M.S. Champion was expected at Rarotonga from Esquimault and Honolulu when the Richmond left on the 13th instant, and was to proceed on to Tahiti. The French warships Scorffand Thetis were at the New Hebrides at latest advices.
