On Saturday afternoon next the Auckland Bowling Club open their season at the green, Grafton Road. Tho greens are in splendid order, will accommodate twelve rinks, and will be opened for play by the president. A large number of invitations have been issued to friends of members of the club, and there will be "afternoon tea" for ladies served. Among the guests will be the members of the two new clubs established at Newmarket and I'onsonby. The coming bowling season promises to be a very successful one. On- Tuesday Mr. McVay, ex-president of the Napier Bowling Club, who was en route to Sydney, inspected the green, and was much pleased with the improvements effected. - The annual sermon to Sunday-school teachers in connection with the Sundayschool Union was preached last evening in the Beresford-street Congregational' Church by the Rev. R. Ferguson, and the communion service was conducted by the Rev. Geo. Burgess, F.R.A.S. There was a good attendance, and the service was a solemn and impressive one. At Te Awamutu school examination for ; standards the percentage of failures was I 18.75 ; the percentage passed of 'children | presented in standards, 81.25.
