HAWKES BAY AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL EXHIBITION.
Ohr Hastings' correspondent give? the following particulars : — The Hawkc's Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Society's Show took place on Thursday and Friday. The first day being devoted to judging, the second day was the day that the public from all parts of the province poured in. Such an enormous crowd has never before been seen on the show grounds, the attendance being estimated at fully 8000. Amusement for the young folks was well-provided for, merry-go-rounds and a circus being in full swing all day, while hundreds of picnickers took advantage of the beautiful shade of the weeping willows around the lake to enjoy their repast in coolness and comfort. One of the great attractions of the show was the Napier Garrison Band, which played nice selections during the day. The horses, especially the jumpers and ladies' hacks, came in for great attention. The more noticeable of the latter was a splendid chestnut, Aotearoa, ridden by Mrs. G. P. Donnelly. This magnificent animal beat all-comers at the Christchurch show, but yesterday was only awarded the second prize, the first prize been given to Atma, a bay gelding, ridden by Mrs. E. D. Tanner. Miss Katie Williams rode a splendid hack, Herculaneum, which was greatly admired. The leaping match was the event of the day, the grandstand being packed to witness this interesting contest. Mr. H. H. Hassall, the popular whipper-in of Mr. Mason's hounds, whining the prize. In the ladies' leaping match the excitement was great. Miss Marjorie Rhodes, a young lady of thirteen years, securing the prize amidst rounds of applause. This plucky young girl has hunted with the hounds all the season. The exhibits on the whole were nob up to the standard of the previous years, but the public seemed to enjoy the day's outing, and judging by the attendance the show was an unqualified success.
