IRELAND AND SEPARATION.

In a survey of the history of this most re-« markable country, the year 1838 stands prominently forward; for it was in this period that a movement began, which was destined to have a wide-spreading influence. On April 10th, 1838, a Quaker, animated no doubt by the best of motives, arranged a meeting at which he introduced a Capuchin friar, a man possessed with a most loveable countenance and pleasant voice. > His speech made a great impression upon his audience ; for either whisky, love, or oratory have mighty influence with a true Irishman. The priest did not mince his words. Like a true son of the Church, he went straight for his man, and separation—complete, absolute separation—was the burden of his song. In rich and glowing words he pictured the results which were to follow this step; and, as he urged his auditory to action, ana offered to show them how they could that very night strike a silent but most effectual blow, and actually attain their object— he did all this, the glistening eye and tightening lips told more eloquently than words that the speaker had struck home. This priest was the Rev. Theobald Mathew, and the separation he was pleading for was one from whisky—and right well did the men of Cork respond, thousands signed the pledge, and a most remarkable revival followed.
