TO THE EDITOR. Sir.—Can any of your subscribers, with a head for statistics and mathematics, answer the following queries :—1. How many of the 70 successful candidates at the last general elections achieved the double event, i.e. more than hatf the votes on the roll, and a threefifths majority ? 2. Are the odds against the double event increased by the granting of the franchise to women 3. What, in view of the answers to the above queries, are the odds against the double event ever occurring under the new Liquor Bill? My own impression is that it cannot occur once in a hundred times, but I have not the requisite knowledge (even with the data given) to work the question out. Finally, what will the position be, supposing the clauses referred to, render the Act practically inoperative —I am, etc., J. M. McLachlan. September 14,1893.
