Sir James Hector returned from Cheviot to-day, where he has beeii to examine a seam of coal discovered on the estate while excavating for road purposes. His report is not yet prepared. DITNEDiN, Wednesday. At the Supreme Court, John Hunter and John Burke were sentenced to two year? each for defrauding a young man from the country by means of the "confidence" trick of £4 10s. Sydney Mo Williams was charged to-day with causing to be published a defamatory libel concerning Dr. Truby King, superintendent, Seacliffe Asylum. The defence put in was a plea of justification, and the prosecution pleaded a demurrer to the plea. After a long legal argument, Mr. Justice Williams gave judgment supporting tho demurrer, and fresh pleadings will have to bo pub ill. At the Police Court, Joe Evans was committed for trial on a charge of an aggravated assault on a woman named Julia Ruston. CimisTCiiOKOH, Wednesday. The football match this afternoon between Christ's College and Wanganui College was won by the former by 12 pointe to 9 points.
