The regular meeting of the Auckland City Council was hold last night. Present: Mr. W. Crowther (Mayor), Messrs. Hewson, Farrell, Wright, Trenwith, Grey, Holland, Powloy, Garratt, HesUeth, Swales, and Glover.

Meat Inspection*.—Letters wore received from the Mount Eden, Epsom, and Remuera Highway Boards, and from the town clerk of Newmarket Borough. The replies from the Road Boards were direct, disapproving f the scheme proposed as the time for carrying out such resolutions was inopportune. The Newmarket Council's arply was that they were willing to become a party to tho proposal provided all the Boroughs and Road Boards within a radius of ten miles from tho post-office, Auckland, give their consent to join in. The letters were referred to the joint committee to consider and report. Rates in* Akkkaks. —The Palmerston North Borough Council circular on this subject was received. Nuisance on Beach Road.—Mr. R. Walker renewed his complaint in regard to the nuisance that was created by the deposit of road refuse at the side of Beach Road. In reply to his previous communication, he was informed that the engineer had been instructed not to put any more street refuse on the road. He regretted having to bring this matter before the Council, but street refuse was still being deposited there. The city engineer reported that ho found that tho tips where they emptied the road waste in Mechanics' Bay intake were undergoing repairs and extension, so the carts were unable to get in to deposit the material there, and a few loads were deposited in a hollow on the Harbour Board ground off the Beach Road adjoining Arnold, Cheney, and Co.'s stores, which required raising to bring it to the required level. There was no intention of continuing the deposits here further than raising the hollow to the required level of the road. It was agreed to send a reply in accordance with the engineer's report. Stkeet Nami'-flates —Mr. J as. Henderson formarded samples of street n'.meplates. He was prepared to supply, per hundred, iron-bound 4s 6d each, and strapped 4s each all round. The matter was deferred to be considered with the StreetsCoinmittee's report. Clause sof the report recommended that tenders be called, and this, with Mr. Henderson's letter, was referred back to tho Streets Committee. j

Kerb and Channel Tiles.— Carder Brothers and Co. reported having, at the request of the Council, laid for approval a quantity of their now combined kerb and channel tiles. The engineer reported that, he could not speak favourably of the sample laid in Upper Union-street. Ho had not much faith in the success of the experiment, and feared it would prove too costly if enlarged in size. Mr. Garratt moved, " That the matter be referred to the Streets Committee, with permission to Mr. Carder to lay down the channelling as a test." It was explained that the linn had already laid down about a chain of the channelling, and they were themselves dissatisfied with it. The motion was seconded by Mr. Farrcll, and carried.

Harureaves-stkeet.—Mr. J. L. Gregory wrote, calling attention to a nuisance arising from defective drainage in this street. The engineer reported that the applicant had continued a drain pipe through his properly, and left the end untrapped. It would be a good thing if the pipe was continued, but tiie adjoining owners were satisfied, and tho Council had no interest in extending it, as there were no buildings beyond. Referred to the ward members to report. Drainage.—Mr. Thomas Usshcr drew attention to the fact that the drainage from St. Mary's Road and Dead wood Terrace (lowed through his land in Milford-street. Letter" on the same subject were received from G. B. Howard and S. Grey. The engineer reported that all those letters treated on the drainage of a block of land bounded by St. Mary's Road, Deadwood Terrace, and Milford-street. Several new houses had lately been built here, and the drainage of these houses flowed down a natural depression in the land through Mr. U-<sher's allotment and crosses Milford-street, through a 12-inch pipe. To comply with the trustees of the applicants it would be necessary to lay six chains of 15-inch pipes through Millford-street from a 16-inch pipe crossing at the foot of this street, and lay a 12 inch branch pipe up the gully through the properties of the applicants. Tho total cost would be about £100, bub he should like the Streets Committee to view the grounds before any decision was come to. Referred to the Street Committee to report. Remission ok Rates.—Mr. W. Culpan, on behalf of Somervell's trust, wrote asking the Council to waive their claim for rates for certain premises in Durham-street, known as tho old City Mis-ion school. They were leased by Messrs. Smeaton and Abel, as a school for the benefit of the city waifs, and at a nominal rental of 5s per week on the understanding that no city rates should be charged. Mr. Garratt spoke in favour of the request as the school was not used for profit. It appeared that the lease had now terminated, and it was agroed to take no action in regard to the rates now due.

The Main Sewer.— Tho secretary of the Harbour Board wrote re the diversion of the main sewer, that the foreman of works submitted a report to the Board (a copy of which was enclosed) in reference to the discharge of sewage from the main sewer, and the Board resolved that the suggestion be approve! and adopted. He would be glad to learn that tho suggestions in question were adopted by the Council. It was that to ascertain tho quantity and quality of the sewage a receiving box be fixed at the mouth of the sewer, the Council to find the material and tho Board the labour. It was agreed on tho motion of Mr. Wright, seconded by Mr. Julian, that tho letter bo given effect to.
