The Legislative Council met at 2.30 p.m.

PUBLIC DOMAINS BILL.

The Waste Lands Committee recommended that the Public Domains Bill be not allowed to proceed. Tho committal of the Bill was, on the motion of the Colonial Secretary, sot down for to-morrow.

BILL PASSED.

Tho Magistrates' Bill was read a third time and passed.

SECOND READINGS.

The Cheviot County Bill, and Ward's Conservation of Rights Bill were read a second time.

The Council then adjourned to next day.

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. Thursday.

The Wanganui Hospital Board Empowering Bill, tho Kaiapoi Borough Council Vesting Hill, the Auckland Hospital deserves Bill, the Egmont County Bill, the Taranaki Relief Fund Distribution Bill, the Rirerton Harbour Board Empowering Bill, the Wellington City Empowering Bill, the Wellington Suburbs Sanitation Bill, Harbours Act 187S Amendment Bill, the Ocean 8.-ych (l)unedin) Public Domain Act 1892 Amendment Bill, the Kiwitea County Bill, and the Dunedin Garrison Hall Trustees Empowering Bill were read a second time.

SUPPLYING INTOXICATING LIBORS TO CHILDREN.

The House went into committee on the Intoxicating Liquors (Supply to Children) Bill.

Mr. Skddos said as tho Government intended to bring in a Licensing Bill perhaps the hon. gentlemen would not proceed with this Bill.

Mr. Fisher said he should like to proceed another stage with the Bill.

Clause 2, preventing the supply of liquor to children.

Mr. Seddon moved that a penalty not exceeding £10 should apply to any licensed person who knowingly allowed liquor to be supplied to children, but Mr. Fisher thought the insertion of tho word '"knowingly" would render the whole clause nugatory. Mr. Seddon's amendment was rejected on the voices after considerable discussion.

Mr. Fisher said that as the Government intended to introduce a Licensing Bill deal ing with the whole question lie should hand this measure over to them.

The Bill passed through Committee without amendment, anil was read a third time and passed.

BREWERS AND PI'BLICHOI/SES.

On the motion for the committal of Mr. Fisher's Holding of Publichouses byBrewers Prohibition Bill, Mr, Fish moved, as an amendment, " That the Bill be committed that day three months."

After a short discussion tho amendment was carried by 32 to 19, the Bill being thus killed.

FENCING ACT.

Mr. BiCKLXND moved the second reading of the Fencing Act, ISSI, Amendment Bill, which provided that the time should be extended for si:: months in which a man should bo held iiablo for fencing after patting with his land.

Agreed to.

AGRICULTUKAL AND PASTORAL SOCIETIES ACT.

Mr. BI'CKLAND moved the second reading of the Agricultural and Pastoral Societies Act Amendment Bill, to extend provisions of the Act to poultry, dog, and canary associations.

Agreed to.

MAKKIAUE WITH A DECEASEDS HUSBAND'S

BROTHER.

.Mr. Palmer moved the second reading of the Deceased Husband's Brother':? Marriage Bill, to legalise marriage between a woman and her deceased husband's brother. Agreed to.

THE AUCKLAND OITMFIELDi

Mr. Palmer moved the second reading of the Gum and (iumfields Bill, dealing with gumfields in the North. Mr. J. McKenzie said the Bill involved considerable interest, and he did not think the House should be called upon at present to legislate in the direction proposed. At the suggestion of the Minister Mr. Palmer agreed to an adjournment of the debate for a fortnight till after the report of tho Gumfields Commission was received.

CORRUPT PRACTICES.

In reply to Mr. Scobie Mackenzie, Mr. Seddon said he could not hold out any hope that the Government would take up the Corrupt Practices Prevention Act Amendment Bill. The House rose at 11.45 p.m.
