Blenheim, Thursday. At the Resident Magistrates Courb to-day, before Mr. J. Allen, Resident Magistrate, A. W. Lummas was charged with having assaulted Eliza Campbell with intent to commit a rape. The offence was alleged to have occurred in the prosecutrix's house on the night of Ist August. The case was remanded to Monday. (ißEYmocth, Thursday. A general meeting of importers this evening unanimously resolved to protest against the extra charge of a shilling per ton which the Railway Commissioners have notified will come into force on Monday next, on the ground that consignees will receive no advantage for the extra charge. Tim arc, Thursday. The Education Board to-day resolved to ask the Government for a grant of assistance for repairing tho wreckage by the gale of last week, as they have no funds. The Burke's Pass school buildings are badly damaged. They also resolved to ask that the capitation for the present quarter be made the same amount as last quarter as the measles had reduced the attendance so much.

Weixinoton, Thursday. The Pakipaki licensing case was before the Chief ./u«tice to-day. The Havelock committee had refused the license, and then granted it, upon an Order-in-Couiicil being issued validating a technical omission. Judge Pienclergast said the Order-in-Coun-cil could not stand good, as the Governor had no power tinder the Licensing Act to issue it. The committee therefore acted without legislative authority. He ordered a writ of certiorari to issue quashing the certificate. Sir Robert Stout appeared for the Maoris, who were the plaintiffs. Eighty-five candidates had entered for the competitions of buttermakers for the society's prizes anil certificates, to take place in the showyard, from Tuesday, the 20th, to Friday, June 23rd. Twenty-seven shoeing smiths practising in the society's district 0 (i.e., Cheshire, Lancashire, and North Wales) would compete for the prizes offered for shoeing hunters and agricultural horses.
