Press Association.—Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. THE MERCANTILE BANK CASES. Melbourne, August 3. In the case against Millidge and Davies, for alleged conspiracy in connection with the Mercantile Bank, the point was raised, and is now being argued, that the presentment by the grand jury was invalidated in consequence of an alien being among their number.

The Chief Justice upheld the point raised against an alien having acted as grand juror, and quashed the presentment against Sir M. Da vies and Mr. F. Millidge. TASMANIAN PARLIAMENT. HOBART, August 3. The Opposition caucus decided not to proceed with a motion of want of confidence. Thereupon Mr. Clarke, ex-Attorney-General, moved the reduction of the expenditure proposed by the Government and the imposition of new Customs and probate duties. The Ministry accepted this as a direct vote of want of confidence.

AUSTRALIA.
Adelaide, August 3. The Assembly is debating the motion "That in the event of Chief Justice Way assuming the Governorship he shall not receive additional remuneration." Mr. Grainger argued strongly against the suggestion that the Government should appoint Justice Way for a lengthened term after Lord Kintore loaves. The debate was adjourned.
