ANOTHER ROBBERY OF JEWELLERY.

London, August 2, A BURGLARY has been committed at the residence of the Countess of Wilton, at Maidenhead, and her jewels of the value of several thousand pounds stolen.

A meeting of tiie members of the Paparoa Branch of the Liberal Association was held on July 23th. Mr. It. H antes was voted to the chair. It was resolved that the association bo called the " L'apnroa and Pain Liberal Association." The following officer* were elected:—President, Mr. John Parsons, sen.; vice-president, Mr. George New, sen, ; secretary and treasurer, Mr. IT. Hook ; committee of management, Messrs. K. Hames, W. Goodall, G. Underhill, and Russell Smith, four to form a quorum. That, the annual subscription be 2* 6d. The treasurer was authorised to purchase the necessary stationery, etc. The secretary reported that in compliance with a suggestion made at the last meeting he had written to several of the authorities calling attention to the need of reform in connection with local taxation, in order that the present pernicious tax on improvements be abolished, and the rates be levied only on the unimproved value of the land, leaving all improvements exempt. A reply was read from the Hon. J. U. Ward stating that for some year? he had had the subject under consideration, and that a Bill enabling local bodies to exempt all improvements had been prepared. Letters were also received from Messrs. R. Thompson and Houston, M.H.K.'s, and the Auckland Liberal Association, favouring the exemption of improvements. It was resolved that a telegram be forwarded to Sir Robert Stout approving of tho Direct Veto Bill, as a Liberal measure. The general opinion of the meeting was in support of the present) Government. The secretary reported that 15 members had been enrolled. In response to the association's request, the Premier had courteously forwarded copies of the Bills to be brought before the House this session.—[Own Correspondent.]
