At a large meeting of shopkeepers to-night it was decided to wait on the Minister of Labour protesting against the compulsory closing on Saturday afternoon as provided by the Shop Hours Bill. A petition against the clause is in circulation and in a few hours ;500 names were attached. The Amateur Athletic Club have decided to abandon the 'cycling branch, and to conduct future meetings under the rules of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association. A sum of ten guineas < was voted towards the expenses of the Now Zealand team to compete at the Championship Athletic Meeting in Australia. CIiKISTCIICRCU, Wednesday. At a meeting of the Lyttelton Harboar Board to-day, the chairman reported that the Railway Commissioners hail declined to reduce the charges for haulage from tho Board's cool stores. It was resolved to communicate on tho subject with the members of Parliament for the district, and tho management of the various dairy factories. A man named Matthew Smith, residing at St. Albans, attempted to commit suicide this morning by cutting his head with a tomahawk. He was in a depressed state, suffering incurable heart disease.
