TheOtago Daily Times says :—" Our attention has been called to an evident hardship inflicted upon mariners— both officers and seamen— in the intercolonial trade. It appears that each time they are discharged officers pay Us, seamen and others 2s, as ■hipping office fees. This certainly appears very hard, both on the officers and men employed by companies in the colonial trade, as they are, owing to the necessity of the service in which they are engaged, constantly being shifted from boat to another. One officer of the Union Steamship Company states that timing tho last twelve months he has paid no less than 'Jos in shipping fees ; while, of course, men in lower grades will have paid commeusurately. In addition to this, we believe the Union Steamship Company will have paid a similar amount. This is undoubtedly a severe tax upon men in the intercolonial service, and one which their more fortunate brethren employed on the coastal boats are free from. It would be well when the new Shipping Act is considered in Committee of the House, that these facts should taken into_ consideration, and provision made for reducing the charges at present imposed upon this class of mariners— if not, indeed, to entirely abolish all charges when the men »re cransferretl from one vessel to another, and when engaged in colonially-owned vessels trading in these waters.

The ship Melville Inland lias arrived at Sydney from Sharpness in a partially crippled condition aloft. It, seems that during sortie heavy weather encountered the fnretopsail yard carried away, anil caused such serious damage that the lower topsail yard had to be sent down for safety, Whilst assisting to secure the lower topsail yard one of the seamen named Maidman met with a painful accident. He was struck by a spar, ami had his collarbone fractured. The vessel sailed from Sharpness on April 16, and experienced rough weather almost all the way out. Cape Leuwin was passed on July 3, and then the vessel had another spell of rough and adverse weather, the captain being forced to go round Tasmania. Mount Wellington was lighted on the 11th. A fierce north-west gate was experienced off Tasmania. The squalls were of hurricane force, and there was a very rough sea, which made things anything bub pleasant for a time. The weather continued

more or less rough right up the coast. Cape St. George was passed on the 10th, and next day the wind raged with hurricane fury from the north-west, attended by a mountainous sea. Daring the heavy weather the maintopsail was blown to pieces, and the mizzen staysail split.
