TEST TRIAL OF S.R. SMOKELESS POWDER.
Ox Monday, the 10th instant, Lieutenant Hume, Is'ew Zealand Regiment Artillery, and Mr. Whitney, conducted experiments at the Mount Eden Rifle Range, to test tho Colonial Ammunition Company's MartiniHenry cartridges, loaded with the new S.R smokeless powder. Tho first sixty rounds were fired at 500 yards range, from a fixed rest, six diagrams of ten shots being taken, and on working out the beat diagram, the absolute deviation from point of moan impact was ten and three- tenths inches. Tho second test was also fired from 500 yards ratine, from the shoulder, by Lieutenant Humo, two diagrams of ten shots eacli being taken, the best showing an absolute deviation from point of moan impact of six and two-fifths inches. Considering the state of the weather, which was very dull and cloudy, with heavy rain, it being difficult to see the target clearly, this was an exceptionally good target. There is to be another test of this new S.R. smokeless powder, on the'2'Jth instant, at the Mount Eden Rifle Range, when a largo number of spectators will probably attend. The trial will bo both for cartridges manufactured by the Colonial Ammunition Company, and loaded with S. R. smokeless powder, and loaded cartridges containing S.R. smokeless powd«r, imported from England. The list of the marksmen expected to shoot, on Saturday, the '29th instant, will bo published in a few days.
