ASSOCIATION OF ACCOUNTANTS.

-♦- A meeting called by the Council of the Chamber of Commerce to consider the question of establishing an Accountants' Association, took place yesterday at the rooms of the Chamber, the President, Mr. Adam Porter, in the chair. The Chairman said that the question of establishing an Institute of Accountants bad been considered by the Wellington and Christchurch Chambers of Commerce, and the movement had the support of Mr. Mtzgendd, the Auditor-General. Mr. Bakbek, who said lie had been a Fellow of the Manchester Institute of Accountants, pointed out that the chief difficulty would be to decide who were accountants ami who were not. It was very desirable that such a Society should be formed, not only for the protection of the public against incompetent work, but for the reputation of qualified accountants themselves. He suggested that the matter should be referred to a committee, who would ascertain who were accountants, in order to decide who should be admitted to the association and who should not. Mr. Grtkrson, recently arrived from England, said that at Home, where he belonged to the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales, any person who wished to become a member could not be admitted until he bad practised his profession f'jr live years. Mr. Jonas believed it *n imperative necessity that such an association should be in existence. It was monstrous to see the things which had been done in Australia under the signatures of so-called accountants. It was resolved, " That it is desirable to form an Accountants' Association in Auckland." . The following committee was appointed : —Messrs. Fraser, Jonas, Wayraouth, jun., Gilmer, Barber, Churton, and Grierson. The committee will take the necessary steps to establish the Association, and will communicate with those interested in the other chief cities of the colony, with the object of having similar associations formed in the South. It was suggested that Parliament should bo applied to for a charter. __
