WORK FOR THE UNEMPLOYED.
[BY TELEGRAPH.— PRES9 ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Wednesday. . With the view of mitigating the unemployed difficulty at Dunedin, arrangements are now being made to start bushfelling operations on the second of the improved farm settlements in Otago. It is located on Catlin's River, and probably about 20 men will bo sent up to it within a week, when road works on the western side of the Wairan, near Clifton, will be started as soon as die necessary engineering surveys are made. This may occupy some two or three weeks, after which about 25 'men will be pub on the road works and these men will most likely be drawn from Invercargill. ,j The surveys of roads through the Cheviot estate are now in hand, with a view of enabling a party of men to be taken up from Chiistchurch to construct a road from Hurunui to the Cheviot homestead, and from the homestead down by the River Jed to port. •, A acuity has arisen to delay the commencement of bush-felling operations on the improved farm settlement between Oxford and Rotorua, in the Auckland district. It is situated on an elevated plateau, and although there is abundance of water falls the soil is so porous that the water quickly disappears. Investigations are tlieroforo being made with a view of deter, mining how best to find and retain a supply, of water for stock and household purposes, whether by means of hydraulic rams or tanks. Until these preliminary investigations are completed, no steps can be taken in the direction of sending men up to the proposed settlement,, ; ~. i: ,«k>( *» V s Pokbdin, Wednesday,/ With regard to the , unemployed, a reply has been received from the Premier regretting thc.t'so many men are out of work ; and that the matter is under the consideration of the Labour Department. He also states that the present appropriation is almost exhausted.
