VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.

RIFLE MATCH : PONSO.VBY NAVALS V. H.I.G.M. BOSSAKD. By arrangement, and with the consent of the captain commanding the German man-of-war Bussard now in Calliope Dock, a friendly rifle match was fired at the Mount Eden Riflo Range on Saturday afternoon, between ten of the Ponsonby Naval Artillery and a similar number selected from the crow of the German warship. The former fired with Martini-Henry rifles, and the latter with their own magazine rifles. Want of practice seems to have told against our visitors, for the local team had a very easy victory, scoring 702 at the three ranges against the visitors' 383, who were thus defeated by 319 points. The Bussard men were further handicapped by tho fact that their rifles are not sighted to suit our ranges, and also because of the insufficiency of their practice, some 45 rounds a year being all that they are allowed for practice. After tho match the combined teams had dinner at Mr. T. McEwin's dining-rooms, and spent a very pleasant evening up to about half-past ten o'clock, the usual loyal toasts being drunk according to British and German fashion. During the course of the evening the highest scorer in each team was presented with a handsome massive gold ring, presented by Mr. H. Kohn, who is an .lion, membor of the Ponsonby Naval Artillery. Tho match and the subsequent proceedings were characterised by the utmost cordiality and reciprocal good feeling, and tho visitors bore their defeat with the utmost good grace. The following are the scores :—

At a company meeting: of the Auckland Naval Artillery held on Friday night after parade, and before the routine business commenced, Captain Parker, who presided, referred to the resignation of Lieubonanb Smith. He said it was with sincere regret he had to inform the meeting that Air. Smith bad made up his mind bo resign the position of lieutenant of the company after being a member for '23 years. He had always worked assiduously and earnestly for the welfare of the corps ever since he had been connected with it, and it now afforded him, Captain Parker, great pleasure to propose that Mr. Smith be elected an hon. lieutenant of the corps. • The proposition was unanimously agreed to. Lieutenant Smith, who was present, thanked the company for the honour they had conferred on him in electing him hon. lieutenant of the corps with which he had so long been associated, and he assured them he would bake every opportunity of appearing on parade with them. He would always assist bo the utmost of his power in furthering the interests of the corps. Chief Petty-officer McKay was then elected to fill Mr. Smith's place on the shooting committee, and most probably lie will also accept the position of lieutenant.
