THE CHAMPION SWIMMER OF AUSTRALIA.
Os Saturday afternoon, :iu the Auckland Graving Dock, Ernie Caviill, the champion swimmer of Australia, gave a grand display of ornameutal, fancy, and speed swimming, prior to his departure for Amerioa and England, (it which latter place he will compete for the world's championship. A high wind was blowing, and this, coupled with the fact that many thought the carnival was to take place, as at first announced, in the Calliope Dock, had an appreciable effect upon the size of the audience. A large number however, were present, yet nob nearly so many as the performance deserved, for Mr. Cavill proved himself a beautiful and accomplished swimmer. The programme included an exhibition of fancy swimming given by Mr. Cavill himself, an illustration of the best method of saving life, Siamese swimming, and an aquatic polo match, members of the A.S.C. lending their aid. Great interest was taken in a race between Mr. Cavill and Mr. F. Hedges, the distance being 100 yards; both finished together, the time being lm. 195., some quarter of a minute over Mr. Cavill's record time. _ It was evident, however, he was not swimming ■ his utmost. The following events were also decided — Boys under fifteen, 100 yards: J. Leaning, 45., 1; T. Lindberg, scr., 2; P. Hughes, 55., 3. Five started; won by six strokes. Youths under eighteen, 100 yards: W. "i Jones, 10s., 1; E. ISolan, Bs., 2; B. Lindberg,. scr., 3. Five started ; won easily. Autumn Handicap, 200 yards : M. Scott, scr., 1; H. Hoey, 45.,2; W. E. Cossar, 15a., 3. Four started; very good race, Hoey being good second. : * . < During the afternoon Hunter's Garrison Bandplayed an excellent selection of music, Mr. Hunter being conductor.
