DURING the four weeks ending February 4, the number of passengers carried' on the Government railways of the colony was 61,701, as against 55,020 during the corresponding period of last yoar, while the faros amounted to £7796, as against. £7340 last year. In the Supreme Court James Mills, charged with larceny of a watch and chain, was found guilty, and remanded for sentence. The New Zealand Institute of Surveyors are drafting a Bill upon the lines laid down by the conference at Melbourne. Mr. Jesse Piper will contest the Nesson seat at the next election. The resignation of Lieutenant W. G. Smith, Auckland Naval Artillery, has been accepted. Christchurgh, Saturday. For 100,481 sheep sold on the Cheviot estate, the sum of £42,308 6s 3d was realised, an average of 7s Bi ! d each. The sale is expected to realise £50,000. Greymouth, Saturday. The export of coal produots for the week was 3504 tons.
