SUDDEN DEATH OF A SURVEYOR.
[BY telegraph.— OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Kihikihi, Thursday. Mr. John Rochfort, Government surveyor, was found dead in a sitting posture on tho sofa in the parlour of the Star Hotel yesterday evening. He had only a minute or two before partaken of a hearty evening's tea in good health and spirits. The deceased at tho time of his death had in hand the survey of a large block of land ab the Mokau, and a few days before journeyed thence to this township for the purchase of some fresh supplies, lie it was who mado the first survey of tho Central Railway route southward. Ho leaves a wife and grown-up family in Nelson. His courteous manner and kindly disposition gainod him numerous friends in this place, where he has been a well-known figure for the last ten years. An inquest was held next morning before Dr. Philson, when the jury returned a verdict of " Death through excessive drinking."
